Resignation of Mangaung Metro City Manager Tankiso Mea does not absolve him from alleged corruption: Parties

Opposition parties in the Mangaung Metro say the resignation of City Manager Tankiso Mea does not absolve him from the alleged corruption and maladministration.

This after the Mangaung Metro Municipality confirmed the resignation of the City Manager.

Mea’s resigned after calls from opposition parties for him to be held accountable for alleged maladministration and corruption at the municipality.

The Metro was placed under administration in December 2019 and has been downgraded twice by rating agencies.

Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor David Masoeu says Mea resigned to escape responsibility.

“The council has decided that they’re going to release him. Even though the disciplinary proceedings have not been finalized. So on one hand we are happy that the allegations of misconduct were actually found to be true by the private investigator. On the other hand, we know what the ANC does normally. They will just deploy him somewhere else. We wanted him to account for his actions his failures in the municipality.”

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor Paulnita Marais says Mea resigned just before his disciplinary hearing.

“The city manager just resigned two days before his disciplinary hearings and we as the EFF say he must be held accountable for what happened in Mangaung. Mangaung is in a mess because of him. There is no service delivery everywhere there is water crisis sewerage everywhere. People are suffering because of Mea.”

The Mangaung Community Concern group says Mea’s sudden resignation is an indication of guilt.

Spokesperson Motlatsi Mokgatla says, “This is an indication of admission of guilty from his side and the council. However we want to emphasize that  gone are the days where people will just mess up with issues of governance and finances of taxpayers money and they just go home – without facing any consequences.”

Allegations against Mea include financial mismanagement, unauthorised and wasteful expenditure, as outlined in the video below:

A spokesperson for the Mangaung Metro Municipality, Qondile Khedama, says an acting municipal manager has been appointed following Mea’s resignation.

“The city manager has resigned. The council has appointed Mr. Sello More to act as the City Manager so that the operations are not interrupted whilst other processes are unfolding. Yes, the investigations were instituted against him earlier and we obviously got legal advice as to the council that he has resigned, any other thing outside his resignation will be dealt with by relevant institutions.”

The instability at the municipality continues even after former Mayor Olly Mlamleli was axed via a motion of no confidence last year.

Shona Ferguson: ‘I’m struggling to process everything,’ says Connie

Actress Connie Ferguson says she’s still coming to terms with the death of her husband, Shona. In a moving tribute on Instagram, she says the couple had all kinds of plans in the pipeline, including celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary in November.

“Ours is a once in a lifetime kind of love. We joked about how we were going to be in our old age. How we would take turns supporting each other and being strong for each other. The irony is we have already been doing that for the past 20 years,” Ferguson wrote in a late night post on Saturday, 31 July 2021.

The 47-year-old TV producer passed away on Friday, at the age of 47. The Ferguson family confirmed in a brief statement that he succumbed to complications related to COVID-19, in hospital.

“Oh how God has loved me to give me YOU! We were already planning our 20th wedding anniversary in November, assuming that we had time! (sic) You and I were joined at the hip, now I feel completely off balance, incomplete, without my other half! My SOULMATE”

In addition to being husband and wife, Connie and Shona Ferguson also worked together and had been running their own TV empire – Ferguson Films, a production company which has a number of successful shows to its name, including the mega popular soaps The Queen, Rockville, Igazi and The Throne.

Ferguson says she keeps asking God why her husband had to die.

“I’m struggling to process everything that’s going on! It all just feels like a horrible nightmare that I can’t wake up from! (sic) I feel like I’m living in a twilight zone! (sic) I keep asking God WHY? Why Lord? (sic) Please help me understand! I trust you! I trust you to see me and my family through this! Jamaica sweep 100m podium, Djokovic leaves with nothing

Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah blazed to 100 metres gold on Saturday, becoming the fastest woman alive as she denied compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce a third Olympic title.

In retaining her title Thompson-Herah added a sparkling flourish to a day which had seen US gymnast Simone Biles withdraw from two more finals in Tokyo, and a listless Novak Djokovic fail to take bronze in tennis after his dream of a “Golden Slam” was dashed.

Thompson-Herah led a Jamaican 100m podium sweep with Shericka Jackson in third. The champion’s blistering 10.61 seconds time has only ever been bettered by the late Florence Griffith-Joyner, who set a world record of 10.49 in 1988.

“I put everything in there I gave it 100 and I would say that I’m ready, super ready, but I had to just hold my composure to come out here take it runs by runs,” she said.

“It shows tonight that Elaine is back. She wasn’t gone anywhere.”

The day had begun with local fans defying a ban on spectators to get a glimpse of the triathlon. Big crowds lined the streets at the Odaiba Marine Park on the Tokyo waterfront, defying Olympic staff who carried signs and bullhorns asking them not to gather along the roadside to watch the event.

The setbacks for stars such as Biles and Djokovic have been in a way fitting for the improbable Games, taking place without spectators amid a widening pandemic. Minutes after his singles defeat, Djokovic withdrew from the mixed doubles bronze match.

New COVID-19 infections hit 4 058 in Tokyo, a new record and the first time above 4 000. The government has extended a state of emergency in the capital and expanded it to neighbouring prefectures.

Swimmers Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel recovered some lost lustre for America, while Lyu Xiaojun took gold in men’s weightlifting, bringing China’s haul in the medal tally to 21. Japan have 17 golds and the United States are at 16.

In the first instances of doping at the Games, two sprinters, Kenya’s Mark Otieno and Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare, were provisionally suspended after testing positive for banned substances.

American BMX racer Connor Fields was moved out of intensive care after suffering a brain bleed during his horrific crash a day earlier. Originally one of the big favourites for gold, Fields went down hard in a first-corner crash during the semi-finals.

Much of the focus at the Games has been on superstar Biles, who this week stunned the world when she dropped out of the team competition after a poor opening vault and then declined to defend her all-around crown, citing concern for her mental and physical well-being.

“Today, after further consultation with medical staff, Simone Biles has decided to withdraw from the event finals for vault and the uneven bars,” USA Gymnastics said, adding she would continue to be evaluated daily to see whether she would compete in the finals for the floor exercise and balance beam.

Focalistic teamed up with Davido for the Remix of his 2020 Mega Hit song ‘Ke Star’, produced by Virgo Deep. This record is one of the best collaboration of 2021 and the biggest Club Banger out there.

Outstanding talent, Burna Boy as usual, is enigmatic to watch and doesn’t disappoint as he dishes his verse with sauce and swag on Yaba Buluku Remix video. Unrehearsed yet authentic and full of rhythm; without a doubt, a new dance movement has been introduced. The ambience is authentic and indigenous.

Tunisia’s Ennahda puts off party meeting amid crisis

The head of Tunisia’s biggest party, the moderate Islamist Ennahda, on Saturday postponed a meeting of its highest council after senior members called for his resignation over his handling of the political crisis, party sources said.

Rached Ghannouchi, who is also parliament speaker, has played a critical role in Tunisia’s democratic crisis this week after quickly accusing President Kais Saied of a coup when he declared he was seizing executive authority.

The moves have caused the biggest crisis in Tunisian politics since the 2011 revolution that introduced democracy, with no announcement by Saied of a new Prime Minister or roadmap to end the emergency period.

Saied’s moves, which also included freezing parliament and dismissing the prime minister, have also thrown Ennahda into turmoil, leading to recriminations within the party over its strategy and leadership.

The party has been the most consistently powerful in Tunisia since the revolution, playing a role in backing successive coalition governments and has lost support as the economy stagnated and public services declined.

On Saturday Ghannouchi postponed a meeting of its Choura Council, the party’s highest internal authority, shortly before it was due to take place, three party sources said.

Dozens of younger party members and some of its leaders including Samir Dilou, a parliament member, had called on Ghannouchi to resign, the sources said.

Ghannouchi has led Ennahda for decades, including from exile in Britain before the revolution, after which he returned to a tumultuous welcome at Tunis airport. He stood for election for the first time in 2019, winning a parliament seat and becoming speaker.

Kaizer Chiefs legend questions the signing of Cole Alexander

Kaizer Chiefs legend Abel Shongwe feels the signing of Cole Alexander as a replacement for Willard Katsande is a short-term solution to their problems.

READ | ORLANDO PIRATES LATEST | ANOTHER LOAN MOVE FOR JUSTICE CHABALALA

Shongwe said while he has nothing against 32-year-old Alexander’s ability, he has at the end of the day replaced someone who is almost the same age.

Swazi international Shongwe believes the void left by 35-year-old Katsande should’ve been filled by a youngster who could’ve played for Amakhosi for several years to come.

READ | TEBOHO MOKOENA: KAIZER CHIEFS AND MAMELODI SUNDOWNS INTEREST CONFIRMED

“Chiefs now I think will be a different team, I’m happy with the players the management have signed, they will help the team,” Shongwe told Kickoff.

“The player that I’m not too sure with is this boy that was playing in India. What worries me is the age because we’ve already got the players who are in that age [group].

“We are releasing someone who was around the same age as Katsande, that’s my biggest worry.”

READ | ORLANDO PIRATES LOAN ATTACKING DUO TO SOWETO RIVALS AHEAD OF NEW SEASON

Meanwhile, Shongwe added that reports linking Bongani Zungu to the Glamour Boys excited him, but that move ultimately fell through.

“I heard that they might be bringing Bongani Zungu, so I don’t know what happened to that story, and that was gonna be a very good replacement for Katsande,” Shongwe, who played for Kaizer Chiefs between 1986-1988, said.

“I’d rather bring Parker and Blom in that position. It’s not that I doubt him [Alexander] but I doubt the age. But let’s give him the benefit of the doubt because the coach was there [in India] and he knows him.

“So, probably he will fit exactly the space that was left by Katsande. But I’m happy with the signings of Kaizer Chiefs so far.”

Watch | British & Irish Lions clap Springboks off the field

South Africa overcame the loss of injured star forward Pieter-Steph du Toit on Saturday to score 21 unanswered second half points and beat the British & Irish Lions 27-9 to level the series ahead of next weekend’s final Test.

The dominance of the Springboks after half-time yielded tries from wing Makazole Mapimpi and centre Lukhanyo Am and the tourists finished a well-beaten team before the third Test and series decider, also in Cape Town.

Flyhalf Handre Pollard scored the rest of the home points from a conversion and five penalties while rival playmaker Dan Biggar slotted three penalties for the Lions.

“This is special. It has been a tough week – the toughest week I have ever had to face,” said South Africa skipper and flanker Siya Kolisi.

“I am grateful to the management and coaches we have for making us focus on the mistakes we made (last weekend). We fight together as a team and it came through for us.

“We did not worry about mistakes and the injuries, we just gave 100 percent. We will enjoy this but the work is not done. It is all or nothing next week.

“You have got to trust in the system, trust in the guys around you. We have been in a bubble but we are thinking of the (South African) people. There is one more week and we will give it everything.”

READ | DUANE VERMEULEN OUT OF FINAL BRITISH & IRISH LIONS TEST

Reigning World Rugby Player of the Year Du Toit was forced to leave the field after 22 minutes following an earlier late tackle by South Africa-born Lions winger Duhan van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe and Springboks counterpart Cheslin Kolbe were yellow-carded within two minutes of each other midway through the opening half of a match superbly refereed by New Zealander Ben O’Keeffe.

The first Test had been riddled with controversial decisions and Australian referee Nic Berry and South African TV match official Marius Jonker came under heavy post-match fire.

As was the case in first Test last weekend, won 22-17 by the tourists, it was a tale of two halves at a spectator-less Cape Town Stadium due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lions led 9-6 at half-time and the advantage would have been greater had Kolisi not got an arm under the ball to prevent Lions centre Robbie Henshaw scoring after he crossed the tryline.

An astonishingly long first half lasted 64 minutes – 24 minutes more than it should have – owing to injuries, a mini brawl and video checks of various incidents.

After 45 minutes, Mapimpi snatched a Pollard cross-kick, cut inside and evaded several tackles to score and give the hosts a lead they never surrendered.

Am struck just past the hour mark, getting first to a grubber kick from scrumhalf Faf de Klerk just before the ball crossed the dead-ball line.

Pollard converted for an 18-9 advantage and then kicked three penalties against opponents who had nothing to offer as an attacking force in the closing stages.

Lions skipper and lock Alun Wyn Jones said: “There was a momentum shift in the second half in South Africa’s favour. The aerial battle went against us in the second half and so did the breakdowns.

“We did not want to take it to a third week but we will have to. We put ourselves under pressure in the second half.”

South Africa will create history if they triumph again next Saturday as neither they nor the British & Irish Lions have won a series between them having lost the first Test.

Call for urgent parliamentary debate on SANDF role and funding

Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence has called for an urgent parliamentary debate on the role and funding of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF).

This follows the committee’s oversight visits to KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces where members of the SANDF have been deployed to assist the police in quelling unrest and looting in those provinces.

In their report back to parliament, MPs say they’ve noted the poor state of the equipment of the SANDF due to budget cuts.

They’ve also expressed unhappiness with the lack of strategic airlift capability of the Airforce and its impact on the movement of troops and equipment in support of the police.

MPs have also raised concerns about the level of strategic intelligence provided to the soldiers and the police.

Parliament is expected to resume in the second week of August following the winter recess.

“The committee expressed its concern about the state of equipment of the SANDF and acknowledges that this has been a subject of debate for some time. However, the negative impact of budget constraints on the status of the SANDF’s equipment and the resultant impact thereof was clearly visible. During the most recent oversight visit. In line with the committee’s constitutional mandate to make recommendations on the defence budget and armaments. The committee will request a joint report from the SANDF and the national treasury on critical equipment requirements and the funding thereof,” says defence committee researcher, Wilhelm Janse van Rensburg.

Discussion on the cost of SANDF deployment:

Drake Declares He’s Done With Album, ‘Certified Lover Boy’

A couple of weeks after revealing that the album was being mixed, Drake has confirmed that his forthcoming album, Certified Lover Boy is finished.

As a whole lot of people are awaiting Kanye’s forthcoming album, so are others impatiently waiting for that of Drake, which ought to have dropped last summer, but got pushed forward due to a couple of things. Also, he announces that ‘CLB’ would drop in January but he could not due to his health issues.

Album’s cooked, the Rap god said before a heavy sigh. Looking forward to delivering it to you. I hope everybody in the world is blessed. I hope everybody has their drinks, everyone’s locked in. Good vibes and good energy for this weekend.

And for the rest of you heathens, I wanna tell you, ’cause I know you’re listening, don’t trouble people’s kids, don’t bother people’s soul. Know what I’m sayin’?

OVO, we aim for that head. We don’t aim to please. Certified Lover Boy on the way. And that’s for anyone in the way. Fans have expressed that they hope the project arrives sooner than later, and of course, there comes the speculation that CLB will drop on the same day as DONDA.

We don’t expect that to happen, but Drake previously promised that his work of art would be released by summer’s end. Time’s ticking.
