Tokyo Olympics silver medal winner in women’s surfing Bianca Buitendag is heading back to South Africa – and into retirement.

Buitendag, 27, from Victoria Bay on the Garden Route, stunned the surfing world when she knocked out a series of high-ranked opponents en route to making her way into the final of the inaugural surfing tournament at the Olympics.
She would ultimately fall short at the final hurdle, going down to American Carissa Moore in tough conditions in the gold medal decider.
Post-event Buitendag confirmed she would be hanging up her surfboard.
Buitendag posted an emotional tribute on Facebook to her late father and detailed her reasons for calling time on her career.

She was given an emotional farewell by her Team SA team-mates and management team as she left Japan on Thursday.
