The DA in Mangaung questions appointment of metro police officers with alleged criminal records

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mangaung Metro Municipality is demanding answers following the appointment of metro police officers who allegedly have criminal records.

The party says millions of rands have been spent on the appointment process since 2016.

The unit is yet to become operational despite numerous appointments of officers and the division head.

DA Mangaung Councillor Dirk Kotze says, “They did interviews and screening of people to apply as law enforcement officers and traffic officers but 24 of those members had criminal records behind their names. But the Mangaung metro management would also like to assist these officers to expand the criminal records against their names and that is a major concern.”

Meanwhile, in a statement, the municipality says it has made significant progress in the establishment of the Mangaung Metro Police Department (MMPD).

It further says: “The City has noted the misinformation making rounds about the recruitment of the MMPD’s personnel.

“To date, Mangaung Metro has had Traffic and Law Enforcement divisions, which fall under the Public Safety sub-directorate (Social Services). One of the conditions of the application approval is that the personnel and budget of the existing Public Safety sub-directorate must move to the MMPD, and there are necessary Human Resource processes that must be followed.”
