Although the Proteas fortunes have since turned around of late in Sri Lanka, making for a more positive mood both within their camp as well as the general public, it wasn’t too long ago when extensive questions were asked about some controversial exclusions in the T20 World Cup side, and one of those exclusions that was a heavy talking point was that of Tahir.

Tahir one of few controversial Proteas snubs

The Proteas selectors opted to go for the likes of Keshav Maharaj , Bjorn Fortuin and Tabraiz Shamsi as the three spinners in the T20 World Cup squad. That immediately caused a social media uproar and lots of questions regarding the omissions of other spin options such George Linde, who made an impressive start to his Proteas shorter format career and Tahir.

Besides Tahir the biggest omissions from highlighted by the public were that of former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis and Chris Morris. Du Plessis had retired from the longer format of the game, but was supposedly available for white ball cricket. Morris was another free agent that was available for the shorter formats but wasn’t selected.

Smith explains omissions

Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket Graeme Smith explained the omissions of the above mentioned players. Smith confirmed that there were indeed attempts to rope in the likes of Du Plessis and Morris who have been impressive in T20 tournaments but both the experienced campaigners made themselves unavailable for the Proteas T20 World Cup squad. Smith also explained that Tahir was not considered for selection for the showpiece, despite also being impressive in shorter formats of the game around the world.

Tahir then took to social media to express his thoughts on his Proteas T20 World Cup squad saying: “My biggest passion has always been representing SA , the country which gave me opportunity to realise my dreams.I never announced my retirement in T20s and will stay committed to SA.Sad to miss this years T20 WC but I will keep playing and will look forward for the next WC” he said.

Do you feel as if Tahir should’ve made the Proteas T20 World Cup squad?
