The African National Congress (ANC) leadership in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) says it believes that those responsible for the death of the party’s councillor candidate, Siyabonga Mkhize, are within the ANC party.

Mkhize and another ANC member were gunned down in Cato Crest in Durban on Friday. The third person was wounded and taken to hospital.

The three were in a bakkie after campaigning in the area when they were attacked.

The provincial party leadership which visited Mkhize’s home on Saturday has called for interventions to curb criminal elements within the party.

Meanwhile, Mkhize’s family says it wants to see justice being served. Family member Richard Mkhize says they are distraught.

“We are saddened by his death, the way he was killed is so heartbreaking. We were not ready for this, he was always willing to assist the community. He was so young and his wife is young and he leaves behind such young children. What we want to see is the killers being arrested and brought to book,” says Mkhize.
