‘It has to be handled properly’: Ramaphosa on Sitole’s possible suspension

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is still pondering on National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole’s submissions and that a decision will be announced in due course.

Ramaphosa spoke to journalists in the North West, where he was on the campaign trail in his capacity as African National Congress (ANC) president.

Khehla made representations to Ramaphosa, after he was issued with a notice to suspend. The president had given the top cop an opportunity to explain why he shouldn’t be temporarily removed from office, particularly as an inquiry into his fitness to hold office looms.

Ramaphosa yet to decide on top cop’s fate

President Cyril Ramaphosa was careful not to say too much about Khehla Sitole’s possible suspension, but stressed that the matter was one of public interest.

“We are going through a process. I wrote to him, he replied and I’m considering his replies and his representations. I prefer that we leave it there. It’s a matter of national interest, I know that, but we’d like an opportunity to go through everything and then we’ll make the appropriate announcement at the right time,” Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa had written to Sitole on 20 September 2021.

“Matters that affect the public are always matters that are important to the population of our country and they have to be handled propertly, with a great deal of sensitivity. So that’s exactly what we are doing and we will make progress on this matter”

This follows a damning ruling by the High Court in Pretoria, ordering Sitole and his deputies Francinah Vuma and Lebeoana Tsumani to hand over classified documents to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

The presiding Judge Norman Davis found that the trio failed in their duties by not co-operating with IPID which was investigating several suspiscious deals within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
