The Dikwankwetla Party of South Africa was formed in 1974, when at the time, the party served as the government of the former QwaQwa homeland.

The idea of behind the creation of the party is said to have germinated with Dr TK Mopeli, a former inspector of schools in the Free State area.

In 1997, Dr Mopeli retired from active politics, subsequently thrusting the party’s youth leader Moeketsi Lebesa to the position of party president.
