eThekwini: DA mayoral candidate accuses ANC of paying bribes for votes

The DA’s Nicole Graham, who was in the running to become eThekwini mayor says it’s now back to business on the opposition benches after losing the race to the ANC’s Mxolisi Kaunda – but she maintains that the governing party greased some palms in order to ensure it retains control of one of the last few metros.

The ANC has already taken hit after hit this week – having lost all three metros in Gauteng to the DA. So far the ANC governs in four metros: Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City, Mangaung and now eThekwini.

The council sitting in eThekwini took place on Wednesday afternoon, 24 November 2021 – having been postponed from the Monday after chaos broke out with councilors hurling insults at each other and threatening violence.

Several councillors from minor parties backed the ANC – this victory has been attributed to the fact that the party used a recent amendment to the Municipal Structures Amendment Act to improve its chances of victory. As per the amendment, a political party is now allowed to nominate a councillor from another party or political interest to one or more of its allocated seats on to the council’s executive committee.

DA’S NICOLE GRAHAM FEELS HONOURED DESPITE LOSS

Having lost to Kaunda by nine votes, Nicole Graham tells eNCA that despite the outcome, she feels honoured – particularly given how close the DA was to actually bagging the council. Graham received 104 votes, while Kaunda got 113. Two votes were spoilt.

“I think what the ANC has done between Monday and now is that they have palmed people off with huge amounts of cash to vote for them and the people of eThekwini have got a group of small parties to thank for this outcome. Parties whose names they probably won’t even know. We voted for our candidate, the EFF did to and so did the ACDP and IFP”
