Former Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United striker James Keene has announced his retirement from professional football after 18 years in the game.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Keene said the decision to hang up his boots took him ‘months thought and heartache’.
“My friends, after 18 years of professional full-time football, the time has come to make the hardest decision of my life…” reads Keene’s statement.

“The decision to hang up my boots is one that has taken months of thought and heartache. But after a lot of conversations with my managers, my family and friends – I’ve finally come to the decision to retire from the game that I love,” said Keene in the same statement.
Keene further thanked his family, previous coaches and managers, physios, his former teammates and everyone for the love and support during his 18-year-long career.

The 35-year-old striker was most recently on the books of Osters IF whom he joined soon after leaving South Africa in 2019.
In South Africa, Keene first arrived in 2015 to trial at Kaizer Chiefs but the Soweto giants rejected him after just a few weeks.

Keene would then join Bidvest Wits in 2016 after catching the eye of Gavin Hunt, and he would be recruited by SuperSport United two years later.
Keene left Wits having scored 17 goals made 48 appearances in 2018 whe could only manage four goals and two assists in 28 matches for Matsatsantsa.
