Ex-Orlando Pirates star Phungwayo to remain behind bars until next week!

The Hawks have officially confirmed that former Orlando Pirates star Patrick Phungwayo will remain behind bars at least until next week.

Phungwayo was arrested alongside his friend David Sekgobela on Tuesday on a number of charges including house robbery and car highjackings.


The two suspects appeared in the Joburg Magistrates Court on Thursday but their court case was postponed to 22 November for further investigation.

The duo’s bail hearing is set for Thursday, 25 November, and that means they will remain behind bars until then.


In a statement released on Thursday, 18 November, the Hawks confirmed the former Pirates man and his accomplice face charges of house robbery and possession of stolen property.

Furthermore, Phungwayo and Sekgobela were also charged with possession of stolen/highjacked motor vehicles after an unlicensed Kia Picanto was found in their premises.


And that’s in addition to the charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“The two suspects, Patrick Phungwayo (33) and his accomplice, David Sekgobela (46) appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today on charges of house robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of suspected stolen/hijacked motor vehicles and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” reads the statement.

“Their case was postponed to Monday, 22 November for further investigation and formal bail application on Thursday, 25 November 2021,” added the statement.


Phungwayo starred for Bidvest Wits and Pirates during his playing days before joining Free State Stars following his departure from the Soweto giants.
