The festive season shopping period in South Africa kicks off in earnest on Black Friday, 26 November 2021. According to predictions, retailers are expected to rake in more cash than they did in 2020.

Online payment gateway PayFast is once again launching an online dashboard that allows users to track how much money South African shoppers are spending on Black Friday deals in real-time.

The #BFCMdashboard (Black Friday, Cyber Monday) went live at midnight on Friday and breaks down transaction amounts, the most expensive basket overall on the day, the most expensive basket at the current hour and offers insight into what devices shoppers are using and their preferred payment methods.

In 2020, the single-most expensive basket on the day was a whopping R299 950. It was a bumper day for online purchases despite a decline in overall sales in the country.

PayFast said its online transaction volumes increased by 50 percent compared to 2019.

“The rapid adoption of e-commerce over the course of 2020 has meant that we’ve seen more people shopping online, especially amid fears of a COVID-19 resurgence,” said Jonathan Smit, the founder of PayFast, last year.

According to a Finder survey, an estimated 18,5 million adults in South Africa will participate in Black Friday and search data indicates that Game, Makro, Takealot and Shoprite are some of the most popular retail outlets.

In terms of specific products and brands, search data suggests shoppers will look for deals on products, including phones and laptops, related to Huawei, MTN and Vodacom.
