1915 | The United States calls on Germany to remove its military and naval allies from the Washington embassy.
1918 | The Kingdom of Iceland established the signing of the Union Act with Denmark. The act recognised Iceland as an independent state under one king and Denmark. The monarchy lasted until 1944 when a national referendum formed the Republic of Iceland.
1955 | Arrest of Rosa Parks African-American activist after refusing to relinquish her bus seat to a white passenger.
2000 | Vicente Fox was inaugurated as president of Mexico, ending the rule of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which has been in power since 1929.
2009 | Lisbon Convention comes into force. The Lisbon Treaty, which amended the two treaties the Maastricht Treaty and the Rome Statute. This formed the basis of the European Union ‘constitution signed by 13 countries in 2007.
