Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was on hand to score a first half brace in 4-0 win against Southampton on Saturday, but where he was before, might surprise you.
Jota has continued on from an impressive maiden season at Liverpool last season, by continuing his impressive goal scoring antics during the current campaign.
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves last season
The Portuguese international joined Liverpool from fellow English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, in a move not too many were expecting, at the beginning of the last season. It did not take long for Jota to hit the ground running and prove his worth to the Merseyside-based outfit, finding himself amongst the goals early on.
Jota, who many believed would play as a back up to Liverpool’s famed and already established front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohammed Salah, ended up ousting Firmino to find himself as first choice, before his long injury lay-off. The former Wolves forward would then come back and make up for lost time, finishing the season strongly with 13 goals in his 30 appearances.
He already has more goals than last season
This season, he already has more English Premier League goals than he managed to get all of last season, with seven in 12 appearances thus far for Liverpool, including his impressive brace against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday. But perhaps what might be surprising is that, he might not of even made that game on time.
But where was he before the fixture against Southampton?
That is because, according to SportsBible Jota was participating in a FIFA 22 International qualifying tournament prior to Liverpool’s game against Southampton. Furthermore, it is said that Jota had to leave the game early and forfeit in the fourth round in order to join up with the rest of the squad in time. That would then explain his goal celebration on the day. The Reds fans will undoubtedly be grateful that he was able to drop one game, in order to make the other one on time. And to them? That’s the one that mattered any way!
