Police arrest heroin smugglers, recover R6,9 million worth of drugs

Police have arrested three men aged between 27 and 40 for allegedly smuggling heroine valued at R6,9 million from Mozambique into South Africa this week.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that the three men were expected to appear in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of possession of heroin. The SAPS Empangeni Task Team arrested the trio on the Nseleni off ramp.

“Police received intelligence with regards to the suspects who were transporting drugs from Mozambique towards Empangeni,” Gwala said.

“An operation was put in place to act on the  information. The vehicle with three occupants was spotted and it was stopped so that a search can be conducted,” she said.

“Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered 23 bags of heroin hidden in the bin of the bakkie. Each bag weighed 2kg and the estimated street value of the recovered drugs is R6.9 million,” Gwala said.

She said that the police arrested the suspects, who are foreign nationals, and charged them with being in possession of drugs.

Police intelligence operation leads to recovery of cash, firearm

Meanwhile, in an unrelated police intelligence operation in the Ugu District this week, police arrested a robbery suspect, Qiniso Duma, and recovered cash, ammunition and a firearm.

“The operation was conducted by various units in the SAPS at Umzinto area where police were following up information about a group of armed robbers who were robbing residents,” Gwala said.

“The team went to a house at the Nkonka Informal Settlement in Umzinto where they conducted a search. A 26-year-old man was found to be in possession of a pistol with four rounds of ammunition,” she said.

She said police also recovered R7500 in cash and a cellphone.

“It was later established that the recovered cellphone was stolen during a house robbery in Umzinto,” she said.

Gwala said that on 21 November 2021 at 21:00, two armed suspects had allegedly entered a house in Thafeni in Umzinto and demanded stockvel money.

“The suspects took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene on foot. The suspect will be profiled for his involvement in the robbery case as well as other cases reported in Umzinto and surrounding areas,” Gwala said.

Duma appeared in the Umzinto Magistrates Court to face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, ammunition and possession of  stolen property. He was remanded in custody until 29 November 2021.

“As the festive season is near, we are appealing to stockvel members not to keep large amounts of cash at home. People are being robbed of their cash and some are killed. They are advised to consider safer options like depositing the money into a bank account,” Gwala said.
