Motorists across the country now face the daunting prospect of paying R20 per litre for their fuel from Wednesday onwards. Fill up before 1 December 2021.

In other news, medical experts and leading politicians are giving the unvaccinated an ultimatum. The professor, Salim Abdool Karim, proposed a ban on unvaccinated individuals attending indoor events and situations, where the risk of transmission rises.

TODAY’S LATEST NEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA, Tuesday 14 September

Fuel hike confirmed: Petrol price to hit R20 PER LITRE from Wednesday

A sickener, and then some: There are plenty of ways to describe the latest petrol price hike announced for December 2021 – we’re just not sure we can publish them without getting some sort of fine. Motorists across the country now face the daunting prospect of paying R20 per litre for their fuel from Wednesday onwards.

Both grades of petrol will be subject to an increase of 81 cents. Meanwhile, wholesale diesel prices are going up by 72 cents as well. This marks the SIXTH month since May where the cost of fuel has increased, and the announcement comes four weeks after another mammoth rise shocked the motorists of Mzansi.

No-one will be surprised to hear that, for the fourth month out of the previous five, a new petrol price record has been set at the pumps. The threat of R20 per litre seemed almost alien at the start of the year, too…

Here’s what it will cost to fill-up your tank in December

Do you ever get the feeling you’ve been shafted? The latest fuel hike for South Africa has caused more misery for the motorists of Mzansi, after another 81 cents per litre was added on to the petrol price, and diesel will also become 72 cents p/l more expensive. The changes come into effect from Wednesday 1 December.

The average per-litre cost, based on the type of fuel and its location, has been calculated by the AA. South Africans only have another day left before the monster hikes kick in, taking our gasoline prices to expensive new heights.

RABIES ALERT: City warns of spike in human cases of deadly disease

A spike in rabies cases has been reported in the eThekwini Municipality in recent weeks the city has warned.

This comes as the National Institute for Communicable Diseases last week reported an increase in the number of human cases of the disease.

eThekwini Municipality warned residents on Monday to be vigilant and to keep away from stray animals that may not have been vaccinated against the deadly disease, following a spike in reported cases of the deadly disease.

“The public is urged to be aware of an increase in rabies cases and to stay away from animals that have not been vaccinated against rabies,” eThekwini Municipality Spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said.

‘Sharp increase’ in Tshwane’s COVID hospitalisations – most unvaccinated

Tshwane, the current hot-spot of the Omicron variant outbreak, is now experiencing a ‘sharp increase’ in the number of patients who have been hospitalised by the virus. During a Health Department briefing on Monday, it was also revealed that 87% of these admissions were ‘unvaccinated’.

Dr. Waasila Jassat made her findings public earlier today, and they tell a stark tale about the direction of this pandemic. The Omicron variant is thought to have a transmission advantage over Delta, sparking a wave of new infections in Gauteng. As cases rise, it is inevitable that hospitalisations and deaths will follow.

However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Omicron is a deadlier strain. If a variant is deemed more transmissible, that means it is capable of spreading faster, and causing an increase in fresh cases. Even with our vaccines, it’s worth remembering that around 64% of South Africans haven’t been jabbed. So pressure on hospitals is inevitable.

‘Don’t allow the unvaccinated indoors’: Abdool Karim issues events warning

Two years into a pandemic, and six months after the vaccine was officially rolled out in South Africa, the scientific community is seeing its patience wear thin with unvaccinated citizens – and Professor Salim Abdool Karim has proposed a contentious measure to help fight the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The infectious disease expert believes that a sharp rise in cases, fuelled by the newly discovered Omicron strain, will eventually pile the pressure on our hospitals over the festive season.

Furthermore, it’s understood that fully vaccinated individuals will still have a high degree of protection against severe illness and death, despite the troublesome mutations presented by Omicron. Abdool Karim is one of many, many leading scientists who fears that this new variant will hit the unvaccinated hard.

Oscar Pistorius moves to Gqeberha prison

It seems Oscar Pistorius is edging ever closer to his parole release. The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that the convicted murderer has left the correctional facility in Pretoria for Gqeberha prison in the Eastern Cape, a statement said on Monday.

The former Paralympian has been serving a 13-year jail stretch for the murder of his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day in 2013.

The department said the call has been made to facilitate the start of the victim-offender dialogue. Gqeberha is where Reeva Steenkamp’s parents are based.

“The transfer is necessitated by the need to commence with the processes of a victim-offender-dialogue as the victims are based in Gqeberha,” said the department’s spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo via the Citizen.
