This story is as gruesome as they come: The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed reports that a human head linked to the Soweto body parts case, have been discovered.
The finding comes just a day after the suspect, 26-year-old Flavio Hlabangwane was remanded in police custody on charges of murder on Monday, 15 November 2021.
He appeared before Protea Glen Magistrate’s Court where the case was postponed to Monday, 22 November.
It was Hlabangwane’s girlfriend who made the grim discovery: reportedly finding legs and arms inside his fridge, during a visit to the backroom of the Protea Glen home he had been renting. It is believed that he was not present and had been out running an errand.
According to police, Hlabangwane tried to commit suicide upon his arrest on Saturday by stabbing himself.
Hlabangwane is a master’s student, according to SowetanLive and was formerly employed by a prominent insurance company. According to his LinkedIn and Facebook profiles, he is a Wits graduate. His girlfriend is also a student.
Soweto body parts case: Woman’s family comes forward
While police had said forensic tests on the body parts would be conducted to establish the identity, the family of the victim has come forward, eNCA reports.
Authorities found the woman’s ID while they were combing through Flavio Hlabangwane’s house for more evidence linked to the body parts case.
“The police have found a human skull buried in a shallow grave next to Glen Ridge, Westanoria road, R558. The skull is linked to the human limbs found on Saturday. These body parts are being connected to a 23-year-old woman from Soshanguve in Pretoria.”

Protea Glen community members are still in shock over the case, especially those who were close to Hlabangwane.
