This week: Julian Assange to marry his South African fiancee in prison

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is set to marry his South African bride-to-be in prison sometime this week! Assange and his fiancee, South African-born lawyer Stella Morris have formally registered to get married in the London prison where he is being held, the Daily Mail reported.

According to the publication, Morris visited Assange on Wednesday, 24 November 2021, in Belmarsh Prison, where he has been since 2019 after he was infamously hauled from the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Assange took refuge in the embassy in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over a sexual assault case that has since been dropped.

Assange is currently fighting efforts to extradite him to the US where he faces espionage charges stemming from his procurement and leaking of classified documents related to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Julian Assange’s fiancee admits circumstances no ideal

While most women’s dream wedding does not involve getting getting hitched inside a prison, the circumstances surrounding Julian Assange’s situation are certainly not lost on Stella Morris and is set on marrying the Australian national.

After blaming the UK government of getting in the way of their wedding plans, Morris told journalists that she was glad there would be no further hinderances and would finally able to wed Assange.

“Of course, the circumstances are not ideal but I am relieved that reason has prevailed and I hope there will be no further interference with our marriage. In the UK everyone who is old enough, no matter who they are or where they are from, has a basic human right to get married to whom they choose,” she said.

Born Sara Gonzalez Devant, Stella Morris was born in South Africa in 1983 and spent her childhood in Sweden.

According to MailOnline, Stella has a theatre director mother and urban planner father. She now lives in the UK with her two children fathered by Assange: Gabriel and Max. The couple met in 2011 but only started dating in 2015 and became engaged two years later, which was kept under wraps for some time.

“Julian is not charged with any crime in this country, he is not serving a sentence, his imprisonment serves no purpose at all other than to prolong and make his suffering worse. I hope the injustice of this situation is swiftly brought to an end so that we can enjoy marriage outside of the walls of Belmarsh when he is freed”
