The DA’s Mpho Phalatse has made history by becoming the first female mayor in the City of Johannesburg. Phalatse won by a resounding margin – bagging 144 votes while the ANC’s Mpho Moerane only managed to receive 121.
The DA’s candidate Vasco da Gama was elected speaker. Da Gama, who was in the post between 2016 and 2019, received 147 votes while the ANC’s Eunice Mgcina got 118.
The DA makes a comeback in Joburg, thanks to support from the EFF and ActionSA.
Phalatse has admitted that she hadn’t anticipated emerging victorious in the election for mayor, particularly given the fact that coalition talks between the DA and ActionSA, Freedom Front Plus, ACDP and UDM didn’t end so well.
While this isn’t Phalatse’s first rodeo (she was Joburg’s MMC for Health under Mashaba ), what else is there to know about her?
Profiling new Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse

- She was born and raised in Tshwane – having been raised by her grandmother in Hebron and staying with her parents, both of whom were educators, in Mabopane.
- Phalatse is also a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners (ABIME).
- After venturing into the business world, she decided to return to healthcare by registering for an MMed in Public Health Medicine at Wits University in 2011. The decision was inspired by the poverty Phalatse saw in underdeveloped villages in the North-West.
