Anger over Tunisia’s pandemic failures fuels political crisis

Waiting in line to receive a COVID-19 jab from the Tunisian army, Zubeir Bin Ammar was in little doubt that the military and President Kais Saied were succeeding where the government he removed from power had failed.

“May God bless the army and the president. I hope they let him rule because we live in a country that was run by mafia,” said Bin Ammar, a teacher. He showed scant concern as to whether Saied’s actions on July 25 constituted a coup and a threat to Tunisia’s young democracy, as his political adversaries claim.

“He followed the people on the streets, not political parties,” said Bin Ammar, who is married with children and lives in Jendouba, 150 kilometres west of the capital Tunis.

Failures in dealing with spiralling COVID-19 cases in Tunisia stoked anger at the government in the weeks leading up to Saied’s decisions to sack Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and suspend parliament, with support from the army.

Coupled with a deep economic malaise, the COVID-19 crisis brought many Tunisians into the streets in protest at the government and the main parties in parliament, including the mainstream Islamist Ennahda, before Saied’s decision.

So far, around 940 000 people have been fully vaccinated among a population of 11.6 million. Tunisia has reported around 18 000 deaths and more than half a million infections. At one point last month it had the worst infection rate in Africa.

During a recent religious holiday, the government opened walk-in vaccination centres, but was unprepared for the large numbers who showed up to get a shot and, as people crowded into dense queues without social distancing, the supplies ran out.

That debacle was the final straw for many people in the government’s handling of the pandemic – and prompted Saied to announce soon afterwards that the military would take it over.

It proved a key moment in a long-running tussle between Saied and Mechichi in a system that gives the president direct control over foreign and military affairs while putting the government in charge of most domestic issues.

Tunisians had chafed for years at economic stagnation and deteriorating public services as politicians bickered. Saied, elected in 2019 as a political independent, was seen by many Tunisians as ready to challenge the dominant political parties.

When the pandemic descended on Tunisia last year, a tough initial lockdown delayed infections but hit poorer Tunisians by preventing them from working.

A shopping trip ended in tragedy for a Freestate family when their three year old child fell to his death at a Bloemfontein Shopping mall on Sunday afternoon.

SAPS regional spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said that the family of four, from Bergman Square, had visited the mall to do their shopping when the incident occurred.

Makhele said that the family had done their shopping and headed towards the parking area in the afternoon.

“At about 2:30pm they headed towards the parking area identified as M3 with the intention to leave the building. The father remained behind to pay for the parking ticket and when he joined the other members of the family he noticed that the three year old son was missing,” Makhele said.

Makhele said that the family immediately started searching for the child until they met a security officer who informed them that their son had fallen to the ground.

Watch: ‘Catch of the tournament!’ – Quinton de Kock takes a stunner in The Hundred

It’s official: Quinton de Kock can move in FOUR dimensions. The Proteas glovesman claimed one of the best catches of his career on Sunday night – and the grab was declared as a ‘standout moment’ of The Hundred so far.

London Spirit vs Southern Brave RESULT

De Kock, who recently went viral for a genius bit of fielding he pulled off for South Africa against Pakistan, showed sharp reactions once more, as his Southern Brave franchise ousted London Spirit by four runs in a thrilling encounter.

In fact, QDK also recorded a superb run-out, holding his nerve to send Blake Cullen back to the pavilion. However, by this point, his show-stopper had already wowed the crowds at Lord’s.

The dangerous Josh Inglis, who scored a valiant 55, was looking to add more runs to his total when he decided to play a reverse sweep off Chris Jordan. However, Quinton de Kock was able to anticipate the shot, and moved over slightly to his right. Inglis tickled the ball away, but it couldn’t escape the outstretched mitt of the nimble wicketkeeper.

Watch: Quinton de Kock takes stunning catch in The Hundred

Come on, we all know why you’re here… just look how good this was!

      • Here’s how it looked in real-time:

      • The reverse angle, however, is so much better

      • And for those of you who want to see it in a GIF format, you’re in luck…

England’s new cricket tournament: What is The Hundred?

The Hundred is certainly a divisive competition. Whereas some have championed it as a ‘new era’ for franchise cricket, more traditional fans of the game have lamented some of the shifting fundamentals.

Bowlers only delivering five balls at a time instead of six – and a shift from ‘wickets’ to ‘outs’ – has infuriated the purists. However, as Quinton de Kock has shown us, it is an undeniable source of thrilling entertainment.

Mother finds daughter dead in wheelchair unattended at Helen Joseph Hospital

In a horrific ordeal, a Joburg mother claims that the Helen Joseph Hospital staff ignored her critically ill daughter, ending in finding her dead in the same spot she had left her the day before.

THE MOTHER FOUND HER DAUGTHER DEAD AT THE SAME SPOT

Nqobile Dube, took her 26-year-old critically ill daughter Sichelesile to the hospital on Monday at 1 pm and was told she would be admitted at 9 pm that night.

But when she came back late on Tuesday afternoon, she found her daughter dead in her wheelchair at the same spot, with her mouth and eyes wide open.

Dube told Eyewitness News was that not a single staff member seemed to notice until she made them aware of the death.

“I went to call a sister to help me [and] she said she couldn’t [because] she is busy. I tried to lift her, but she was gone,” Dube said.

DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health Jack Bloom MPL said he was horrified by the ordeal suffered by devasted mother.

“This terrible story highlights once again the neglect that many patients have experienced at Helen Joseph’s casualty, which is grossly overcrowded with patients who can wait days before being admitted to a ward.”

ALSO READ: Watch: Mother fights back when kidnappers grab her five-year-old boy

He said the situation has worsened with the Covid-19 epidemic and the extra burden of patients who would have gone to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital (CMJH), which has been largely closed since the fire there in April this year.

ALSO READ: Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital still closed amid third wave

“Instead of assisting the Helen Joseph, the Gauteng Health Department has dithered in reopening the safe parts of CMJH and wasted huge amounts of money in building extra beds in the wrong areas without staff and equipment.

“This includes R500 million spent on the 181-bed Anglo Ashanti Hospital in the Far West Rand that does not even have oxygen for the small number of Covid patients admitted there.”

According to Bloom a full investigation is needed into this incident where the mother found her daughter dead.

“But what is really required is a complete overhaul of the Gauteng Health Department to ensure that money is spent effectively to ensure adequate staff and equipment at all public hospitals.”
