Four killed, dozens kidnapped in eastern Congo ambush

Four civilians were killed and dozens taken hostage in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Wednesday when suspected Islamist militants ambushed a convoy and set fire to the vehicles, the government said.

Congo’s army has freed more than 50 of the hostages in Ituri province and operations are underway to recover the remaining captives from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan Islamist group, the Communications Ministry said on Twitter.

The Ministry did not say how many people were still being held hostage.

A local lawmaker said earlier that about 80 people were believed to be missing after the attack on a convoy of about 100 vehicles that was travelling with army protection on the road between the cities of Beni and Butembo.

Attacks by the armed groups operating in eastern Congo’s borderlands with Rwanda and Uganda have continued unabated despite the government’s imposition of martial law in Ituri and North Kivu province at the beginning of May.

The installation of army generals as provincial governors was meant to quell a surge in violence that the military largely attributes to the ADF.

But the number of civilians killed in such attacks has increased, according to the Kivu Security Tracker.

Survivors of Wednesday’s attack recalled a hail of gunfire as the convoy passed near the village of Ofaye.

“Bullets started flying in every direction,” one of the survivors, Malanda Dague, told Reuters. “Some vehicles were hit and then burned.”

Jean-Paul Ngahangondi, a member of parliament in North Kivu province, where the convoy started, criticised what he said was the army’s slow response, a frequent complaint of local people.

“The army just waits for the rebels to kill the population and only then pursues them without any positive results,” he said.

Eastern Congo has been plagued by violence since regional wars around the turn of the century.

Islamic State has claimed dozens of killings blamed on the ADF, although UN experts say they have not found conclusive evidence that IS has control over ADF operations.

Ronaldo netted twice as Portugal beat Ireland 2-1 in the FIFA World Cup qualifier on Wednesday to take his international goals to 111.

Going into the encounter, Ronaldo was sitting on 109 international goals; the record he held with former Iran star Ali Daei.

Daei scored the 109 goals for Iran between 1993 and 2006, and it took 15 years for his record to be broken as Ronaldo matched it during the 2021 UEFA Euro Championships.

Now, with his 89th-minute equalizer against Ireland, Ronaldo overtook Daei before moving two goals clear of the Iran marksman with a stoppage-time winner for Portugal on the night.

In fact, Ronaldo could have set the new record in the first half of the same encounter had he not failed to convert his spot-kick.

DIRCO: SA unable to accept Afghan refugees after fall of Kabul

South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has said the country opted to reject a request to take in refugees from Afghanistan, who had sought refuge in Pakistan, in the wake of the Taliban takeover.

Hundreds of thousands of Afghans have fled the country, out of fear of Taliban rule. The militant group swept into the capital Kabul earlier in August, seizing control of the government and forcing President Ashraf Ghani to flee.

South Africa not taking in Afghan refugees

A number of countries have agreed to accommodate Afghan citizens, however DIRCO says South Africa cannot follow suit, citing its own immigration situation.

“The South African Government notes the overtures made to the Country to consider receiving a number of Afghanistan refugees who have sought refuge in Pakistan. The request is that they be accommodated in South Africa en-route to their final destinations,” said DIRCO spokesperson Clayson Monyela.

“The South African Government is unfortunately not in a position to accommodate such a request. South Africa is already home to a substantial number of refugees and is seized with addressing their needs. Most of them already benefit from the Social Assistance and free medical health programmes offered by our country.”

DIRCO spokesperson Clayson Monyela

There are already several million refugees in South Africa, most of them from African countries.

“In terms of international law, the well being of the refugees is best served by remaining in the first country arrival – Pakistan – pending their final destinations,” Monyela added.

The Taliban has assured 100 countries that it will continue to allow foreigners and Afghans with foreign travel papers to leave the country “in a safe and orderly manner.”

“We have received assurances from the Taliban that all foreign nationals and any Afghan citizen with travel authorization from our countries will be allowed to proceed in a safe and orderly manner to points of departure and travel outside the country,” a statement from the 100-nation group said.
