Vaccine latest: No deaths linked to jabs, says SAHPRA

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has said there is no evidence of the COVID-19 vaccines being linked to any deaths.

The health regulator appeared before Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Health on Wednesday, 1 September 2021.

“What we mean is that the deaths are not related to being vaccinated, in 98% of those cases they were elderly people that received vaccinations early on. Again, we did detailed assessments, age, comorbidities and any medication that they are on,” said SAHPRA CEO Tumi Semete.

According to SAHPRA, 32 deaths were looked into – 30 of them were found to be coincidental, while there isn’t enough information on the remaining two fatalities.

SAHPRA on vaccine efficacy

Meanwhile SAHPRA’s Professor Helen Rees says the effectiveness and efficacy of vaccines can drop as new variants of COVID-19 are discovered.

“And similarly, none of the Covid-19 vaccines are 100% effective. The different vaccines we are looking at will have a different level of efficacy and importantly for the vaccines that are at the most advanced stage with all of the early clinical trials, all of these vaccines showed that they prevent severe disease, hospitalisation and death,” Rees said.

“So, the effectiveness of all the vaccines had stopped somewhat but it has not gone away. The bar that we have set for ourselves, which is the international standard, is to say 50% effectiveness is the minimum that we would expect.”

Rees added that many vaccines are partially effective and act by reducing the severity of disease or preventing symptoms developing even if you have a low-grade infection.

“But 100% vaccines are a rare thing indeed,” she stressed.

A “scoop” in Pinkvilla this morning reported a re-collaboration between actor Vicky Kaushal and producer-director Karan Johar. This, according to the report was an impulsive arrangement facilitated by the cancellation of Kaushal’s big project Ashwathama with producers Ronnie Screwvala and director Aditya Dhar.

No film with Vicky Kaushal, says Karan Johar

Bombay High Court reserves order on Kangana Ranaut's plea to drop defamation charges in Javed Akhtar case

On Wednesday, Bombay High Court reserved its order on a plea, seeking quashing of criminal defamation proceedings initiated by the metropolitan magistrate's court, filed by actress Kangana Ranaut. The complaining was filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar. Following the courts judgment, Ranaut's counsel Rizwan Siddique has earlier challenged the proceedings saying Andheri's suburban magistrate court had failed to apply its mind to the case.

Bombay High Court reserves order on Kangana Ranaut's plea to drop defamation charges in Javed Akhtar case

Ranaut's plea stated that the lower court did not independently examine the complainant or witnesses rather relied upon the discretion of Juhu Police to initiate the case against her. Siddique, on Wednesday mentioned in Justice Revati Mohite-Dere's single bench that the inquiry into Akhtar's complaint was 'one-sided' adding that their witnesses were never examined and magistrate should have ensured that no party is harassed. However Akhtar's counsel Jay Bharadwaj told the HC that it wasn't the case as it being mentioned by Siddique. He said that the police had summoned witnesses and concerned persons including Ranaut, to ensure its inquiry was impartial, but the actor never responded to the summons.

A criminal complaint against Ranaut in November last year was filed before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate by Javed Akhtar for making defamatory and baseless comments against him in an interview. The court directed the Juhu police to conduct an inquiry into Akhtar's complaint in December 2020. The police subsequently confirmed the incident and that an offence of defamation was carried out, with further inquiry into the same being required. The court accordingly, initiated criminal proceedings against Ranaut and issued summons to her in February this year.

The order on Ranaut's plea is likely to be passed on September 9.
