National Assembly Q&A : Ramaphosa expected to answer on Marikana, COVID-19 vaccines, cabinet reshuffle

President Cyril Ramaphosa will have his quarterly Question and Answer session in the National Assembly on Friday morning.

Political parties have submitted a range of questions that they would like answered by the president.

African National Congress (ANC) MPs have asked about the advancement of social cohesion and nation-building, the economic reconstruction plan and policy interventions to ensure the turnaround of local government.

Ramaphosa will also face tough questions from opposition parties regarding the appointment of ministers, the Marikana massacre and the protection of people who don’t want to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen will seek to corner the Ramaphosa on issues related to his recent cabinet reshuffle.

His question is about the criteria the president uses to appoint ministers.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader Kenneth Meshoe wants Ramaphosa to say what steps the government is taking to protect unvaccinated employees who are given ultimatums by their employers.

He’s also asked if there will be protection for tenants who face losing their accommodation if they don’t get vaccinated.

National Freedom Party MP Ahmed Shaik-Emam wants to know the reasons for the delay in bringing about a resolution to the outstanding matters of compensation for victims of the Marikana massacre.

He will also ask when those responsible will be held accountable for the deaths of the miners to ensure closure for the affected families.

Sidharth Shukla was not keen on Bollywood

Like Sushant Singh Rajput after Pavitra Rishta, Sidharth Shukla was already a huge name on television when he made his Bollywood debut in 2014 with Karam Johar’s Humpty Sharma Hi Dulhania.

In spite of the film’s success, Sidharth was not too keen on pursuing a career in Bollywood. In an interview with me Sidharth had said, “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was a great experience. I didn't have the author-backed role. And yet I didn't feel side-lined at all. Throughout the shooting and afterwards during promotion it was 'Humpty' Varun Dhawan, 'Dulhaniya' Alia Bhatt and the Dulhaniya's fiancé played by me. Not for a second did I feel secondary. I've no regrets about at all about doing Humpty Sharma.”

However he ruled out a career in Bollywood. “Now until I get something as appealing as Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania I am back giving all my time to television."

Sidharth Shukla says juggling between Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya and Ballika Vadhu was not easy. "Earlier I had juggled between Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and Ballika Vadhu. So doing two projects together was not new to me. Being at two different shootings at the same time was something I kind of knew how to do. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was something I had to do. I had to stretch myself as an actor."

Park Seo Joon leaves for Los Angeles to shoot for Brie Larson starrer Captain Marvel 2 titled The Marvels

South Korean superstar Park Seo Joon, known for his work in several Korean dramas like What's Wrong With Secretary Kim and Itaewon Class and movies including Academy Award-winning Parasite, was reported to make his Hollywood debut by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to reports, the actor joined the cast of Brie Larson starrer Captain Marvel 2, titled The Marvels. Now, the actor has left for Los Angeles for the shoot and his studio has officially confirmed it.

On September 3, Park Seo Joon was seen leaving from Seoul's Incheon international airport and left for Los Angeles. His agency Awesome ENT released a statement confirming his casting. The statement read, "It's true that Park Seo Joon departed for Los Angeles earlier this afternoon after confirming his casting in the new Marvel Studios film. First, we would like to sincerely thank those of you who have shown great interest in Park Seo Joon's new challenge. We know very well that you are all very curious about what production he will star in, what his character will be, where he will film, for how long, and more. However, we will not publicize more specific details until a later time. We now ask that you cheer on Park Seo Joon so that he can wrap up his filming successfully and return safely."

Park Seo Joon is now the third South Korean actor to join Marvel Cinematic Universe after Claudia Kim (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Ma Dong Seok (Eternals). As per earlier reports in Korean tabloids, Park has been cast in the role of Amadeus Cho a.k.a Brawn, a Korean-American teen hero.

The film progresses with director Nia DaCosta as Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) is joined by Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan). It is set for November 11, 2022.

Meanwhile, Park Seo Joon is currently filming his next movie, Dream with popular musician and actress IU. He is well-known star in the country with international fame for his performances in dramas including What's Wrong With Secretary Kim, Itaewon Class, Fight For My Way, Hwarang: The Poet Warrior, She Was Pretty among others. He also happens to be one of the highest-paid drama actors in the South Korean industry.

Digital Vibes: Dr Nicholas Crisp appointed Health Department acting DG

The Department of Health’s Dr Nicholas Crisp has been appointed as its acting Director-General.

Crisp, the department’s Deputy Director-General for the National Health Insurance (NHI) has played a critical role in the department – as it presides over the country’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the vaccination roll-out.

The department’s DG Dr Sandile Buthelezi has reportedly been placed on leave and has been asked to answer questions in relation to his role in the Digital Vibes scandal.

The company has was irregularly awarded a multimillion rand contract by the DOH and was run by two associates of former minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, who resigned in the wake of the scandal.

Health Director-General’s suspension ‘imminent’

Several officials have been implicated in the saga, however the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) which probed the contract, said it could not disclose the names. Its report on it has already been handed to President Cyril Ramaphosa. It isn’t yet clear, but has been reported that Dr Sandile Buthelezi’s suspension from the department is imminent.

“The country has no shortage of vaccines. Now we are vaccinating about 250,000 a day, and I hope that it stay that way, not just during the 10 days that I will be acting as DG, but until Christmas, so that people are able to move on with their lives. We will keep on pushing the vaccination programme so that we can vaccinate as many people as possible,” Crisp told Business Day on Thursday, also confirming his appointment.

The Presidency confirmed earlier this week that Ramaphosa was mulling over it and has started contacting implicated individuals.

“In the interests of fairness and in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act,  and as a result of a number of applications to have sight of the report, the presidency has sent third-party notices to all people or entities referred to in the report, so they may have an opportunity to object to its publication or part thereof,” his office said.

He further revealed that Sidharth's mother Rita Shukla was strong but had tears in her eyes when he met her on Thursday. His mother told Rahul that death was obvious but it shouldn't have happened so soon.

Sidharth Shukla emerged as the winner of reality shows Bigg Boss 13 and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 7. He made his TV debut with Babul Ka Aangann Chootey Na. He went on to become popular with Balika Vadhu.
