Mother accused of selling her 13-year-old daughter and another girl for sex

A 42-year-old mother from the Eastern Cape is charged with selling her minor daughter and another minor girl for sex to foreigners.

THE MOTHER ALLEGEDLY RECEIVED R400 FOR EACH SEXUAL ENCOUNTER

The mother and two Bangladesh nationals accused of sexually exploiting and raping two minor girls were denied bail by the Keiskammahoek Magistrate’s Court.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani said the mother has been charged with sexual exploitation of a minor while the two Bangladeshis are charged with sexual exploitation of a minor and rape.

“They were denied bail because they failed to present exceptional circumstances in their applications for them to be released on bail.”

She said the two men were also seen as flight risks as they don’t have family ties, assets, or occupational ties in Keiskammahoek.

“The mother was also seen as someone who might intimidate and influence witnesses and complainants as one of the complainants is her daughter.

“It is alleged that the mother sold for sex her 13-year-old daughter and her boyfriend’s 16-year-old niece to the two men.”

At the time of the alleged crimes, one of the men worked as a welder while the other was a sales assistant at a local shop.

“It is alleged that these offences happened from February 2019, when the children were 11 and 14 years, until March 2021.

“The alleged crimes surfaced when the 13-year-old girl, who has a mental condition, asked her friends to accompany her to a man she would have sex with in exchange for money. She promised to buy them, sweets, once she received the money.”

Ngcakani said the mother allegedly received R400 in exchange for each sexual encounter.

De La Hoya, 48, said in a video posted on Twitter that he had been admitted to hospital for treatment despite being fully vaccinated.

“Wanted you to hear directly from me that despite being fully vaccinated, I have contracted Covid and am not going to be able to fight next weekend,” De La Hoya said.

“Preparing for this comeback has been everything to me over the last months, & I want to thank everyone for their tremendous support.”

De La Hoya indicated he hoped to reschedule his return to the ring for later this year.

“I am currently in the hospital getting treatment and am confident I will be back in the ring before the year is up,” he said.

De La Hoya last fought in 2008, when he was subjected to a beating by Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas over eight one-sided rounds.

However in June this year, De La Hoya announced a fully-sanctioned comeback fight against Brazilian mixed martial arts fighter Belfort to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

It was not clear if Belfort would seek an alternative opponent after De La Hoya’s withdrawal.

One report said organisers were targeting former heavyweight world champion Evander Holyfield as a possible replacement. Holyfield, 58, has not fought since 2011.

The 71-year-old Frenchman, who is now director of development at FIFA, also called for a single annual period of international qualifiers in a global football calendar.

“The principle would be a grouping of qualifiers every year, and at the end of the season a major competition, World Cup or continental championship,” said Arsene Wenger.

“Between the two qualifying windows, the player would stay in his club all year round.

“There must be less of a mix in the calendar between the periods of club football and periods of international football, and therefore fewer transcontinental trips for the players, for example.”

Arsene Wenger said he would like to see a single international window, perhaps in October, with fewer qualifying matches.

“For the players, there will be no more matches, and there will be compulsory rest after the final stages, at least 25 days,” said Wenger who sees his proposed new format coming into action in 2028, two years after the 2026 World Cup in North America.

“What people want today are high-stakes, easy-to-understand competitions,” he said, insisting there is “no financial intention behind it”

“It’s a global project, for men’s football, but also for women’s football and youth competitions,” he added.

Western Cape Local Government Minister Anton Bredell has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s ruling that local government elections must go ahead this year.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) approached the court recently to have the elections postponed from October to February next year. This after retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke released an IEC commissioned report in which he recommended that the polls would not be free and fair under the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The Constitutional Court also ruled that elections must be held between a certain time period.

Bredell’s spokesperson James Brent-Styan says, “The court’s decision delivered that the local government scheduled for this year have to take place this year between 27 October and 1 November. The department of local government in the province is prepared for the upcoming elections.”

Parliament receives seventh clean audit

Parliament has received a clean audit for the seventh time for the financial year under review. Acting Secretary to Parliament, Baby Tyawa, has attributed this to the dedication of staff members as well as advice and input from Parliamentarians.

She was briefing the Joint Standing Committee on the Financial Management of Parliament on Friday.

Tyawa says it’s now up to lawmakers to ensure that their mandate of effective oversight.

“Parliament has now again received a seventh clean audit and it’s largely because of the team that works very hard to make sure that what we commit to at least we deliver. Where we have errors we correct, where we have inputs from the committee we adjust and include them. The biggest question is how parliament is going to ensure that effective oversight is done,” says Tyawa.
