Teenage boxer dies after being knocked out in fight

The family of 18-year-old Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata has been left grief-stricken in the wake of her death. She passed away, just five days being knocked out in a fight that took place in Montreal, Canada.

It is with great sadness and torment that we learned, from a representative of her family, that Jeanette Zacarias passed away this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. We would like to offer our most sincere condolences to her family, loved ones, friends and especially her husband Jovanni Martinez who was at her bedside until her last moments,” the organiser said in a statement on Thursday.

Mexican boxer dies

Zapata sustained head injuries, including to her brain, while fighting Canada’s Marie-Pier Houle on Saturday evening, 28 August 2021. Footage from the match showed her being on the receiving end of several power punches near the end of the fourth round. A final right hook by 31-year-old Houle caused Zapata’s mouthguard to fly out and left her unable to return to her corner after the bell rang.

She was then attended to by her partner and trainer, Jovanni Martinez. A medical team at the stadium took her to a local hospital where she was placed in a medically induced coma.

According to CBC, Zapata underwent neurological exams to get permission to fight in Montreal because she was knocked out in a bout last May in Mexico.

Her opponent shared a message on social media not too long after she was taken to the hospital.

“Never, ever, is the intention of seriously injuring an opponent in my plans. My sincere thoughts go to my opponent, Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, as well as to her family,” Houle wrote, according to CBC.

A GoFundMe page had been set up to help with Zapata’s medical expenses and recovery. Close to $15,000 had been donated towards it.

Rugby Championship: Australia vs New Zealand LIVE Scores

Australia vs New Zealand: The All Blacks and Wallabies have added to their historical needle with a recent war of words and this one could get spicy.

Australia vs New Zealand LIVE Scores

Australia vs New Zealand: Match preview

Australia’s narrow Test series win over France might have papered over the cracks but they have been soundly put in their place by the All Blacks in the Bledisloe.

The hosts have been subjected to barbs from across the Tasman that included admonishments for the falling standard of rugby in Australia, which it is feared will affect their Super Rugby partners.

Australia need to prove they are still among rugby’s true powers and though a home victory over the All Blacks wouldn’t immediately wash away their issues it would be a massive boost.

The All Blacks could probably field three or four teams capable of walloping Australia at this point but must guard against complacency, as they cannot afford to lose a step on the Springboks.

Rugby Championship team news

There is just the one change from the All Blacks starting forward pack from the Bledisloe Cup-winning Test in Auckland last month, with lock Scott Barrett coming in for Samuel Whitelock in the second row. Patrick Tuipulotu has a tight groin which sees Tupou Vaa’i come onto the bench for his first Test of 2021. Ethan Blackadder also comes onto the bench as loose forward cover. Ardie Savea will captain the All Blacks for the first time at number eight.

In the backs, Brad Weber gets his second start at halfback in his 11th Test, with TJ Perenara to provide impact off the bench. Beauden Barrett is at flyhalf while Anton Lienert-Brown returns from injury at centre, outside David Havili. Rieko Ioane moves to the left wing, Will Jordan is on the right wing and Jordie Barrett is at fullback. Damian McKenzie and George Bridge are the other back reserves.

Wallabies coach Dave Rennie has selected Samu Kerevi at inside centre while Izack Rodda will make his return via the bench, in what will be their first appearances since the 2019 Rugby World Cup quarter-final in Japan nearly two years ago.

Folau Fainga’a is also set to play his first Test of 2021, named at hooker in an all-Brumbies front row alongside James Slipper and Allan Alaalatoa. The remaining forward pack is unchanged from Bledisloe Two with Matt Philip and Darcy Swain the second row combination, as the Wallabies look to win back-to-back Tests against New Zealand at home for the first time since 2008.

Michael Hooper will wear the number seven jersey and captain the side for the 58th time, just one behind the most decorated Wallabies captain, George Gregan. He’s joined in the backrow by the physical Lachlan Swinton at blindside flanker and Strong-running Rob Valetini at number 8.

After impressing at Eden Park, Reds halfback Tate McDermott will again be the starting scrumhalf, partnering fellow youngster Noah Lolesio (Brumbies) in the pivotal roles for the third straight Test.

Kerevi will combine with Len Ikitau in the midfield at Optus Stadium, the venue of the Wallabies highest-ever points tally against New Zealand in the 47-26 victory in 2019. The back three also remains unchanged with Marika Koroibete set to play his 39th Test for Australia on the right wing with the in-form Andrew Kellaway on the left edge and the elusive Tom Banks at fullback.

Lachlan Lonergan will play in his first Bledisloe Cup Test as the reserve hooker, with Angus Bell brought back into the side as the replacement loosehead prop alongside Taniela Tupou who will share the minutes at tighthead. Rodda will be the replacement lock, while Brumbies backrower Pete Samu is also selected for his first International appearance this year as the backrow cover.

Australia vs New Zealand: What they said

Wallabies coach Dave Rennie said: “It’s great to be able to call on the experience of Samu and Izack this weekend with Hunter and Lukhan leaving the group to be with their partners in what’s a really exciting time of their lives. Both Samu and Izack have worked really hard since joining the group, been positive additions and have earned their opportunity to pull on the gold jersey on Sunday afternoon at Optus Stadium.”

“The past three weeks in Perth have given us a chance to train hard on the field, refresh off it and connect with the local community. We are excited about the chance to be back on home soil and put in a performance that all of our supporters can be proud of.”

All Blacks Head Coach Ian Foster said: “We are ready, and the team is really determined to finish off this block of Tests against Australia with a top performance. We’ve had a really unique situation going into this Test, with quarantine back in New Zealand and a ‘soft’ quarantine here in Perth, but the work that has gone in preparing the players has been outstanding, so when the whistle goes on Sunday, we’ll be ready.”

Foster added: “In the forwards, we have picked a group that is most recently battle-hardened. A lot of them played in the first two Bledisloe Cup Tests, so it’s right to go with them in this Fortinet Rugby Championship Test.”

Commenting on the halfback selection, Foster said: “Brad has been with us through the Steinlager Series and coming into the Rugby Championship, we really wanted to build the nine combination, especially with Aaron not here and to complement TJ’s leadership and experience, so this is a great opportunity to put our faith in Brad to start the Test.”

Foster said the team was excited to be playing in front of a sell-out crowd in Perth this weekend.

“Perth has a great rugby culture and we know that there are a lot of Kiwis living here who will be at the game, so can’t wait to hear their support on Sunday.

DA is ready for elections: Geordin Hill-Lewis

The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s mayoral candidate for Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis has welcomed the Constitutional Court’s decision that the October 27th local government elections will go ahead as scheduled.

On Friday, the court dismissed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)’s application to postpone the elections to February next year.

Hill-Lewis says they are ready for the elections.

“Cape Town works and now is our opportunity to do so much more. To get more done for our residents, so that everyone can live a life of dignity. To get more done so that more people can get into work because Cape Town is the easiest place on the continent to do business. To fight for the ending of load shedding and safer communities for everyone,” he explains.

Earlier, party leader John Steenhuisen said political parties must adapt to the new normal and must continue with the elections.

Speaking to the SABC, Steenhuisen says they welcome the ruling:

Stephens suffers abuse on social media after US Open loss

American Sloane Stephens received a torrent of angry messages on social media, including racist and sexist abuse, following her third round loss to Angelique Kerber at the US Open, the tournament’s 2017 champion said on Saturday.

Stephens, who is Black, said she got over 2,000 messages of abuse after Friday’s 5-7 6-2 6-3 defeat. read more

“It’s so hard to read messages like these, but I’ll post a few so you guys can see what it’s like after a loss,” she wrote in an Instagram story.

What followed was a series of racist and sexist messages aimed at the 28-year-old Stephens.

“This type of hate is so exhausting and never ending,” she said.

“This isn’t talked about enough, but it really freaking sucks… I’m happy to have people in my corner who support me. I’m choosing positive vibes over negative ones.

“I choose to show you guys happiness on here, but it’s not always smiles and roses.”

Stephens, who has been ranked as high as world number three, then posted supportive messages she received from her team after the loss, the people she called “the only ones who matter.”

“Tough one yesterday but let me say I really like the way Sloane is progressing and where we are heading to,” one message said.

“Feel super confident about the next steps. Let’s get ready to win Indian Wells and finish the year strong and start preparing to win majors and come back to the top 10.”

The WTA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mamma Mia! Cape Town included in Abba’s virtual reunion tour

After Swedish superstars, Abba announced the release of a new album after nearly 40 years, new reports suggest that the group will include Cape Town as part of their comeback virtual tour.

Abba’s virtual tual tour

According to IOL, the band announced that cities that will be included in the launch of their virtual tour are Berlin, Cape Town, London, New York, Reykjavik, Rio, Stockholm and Tokyo. Sydney in Australia was also among the eight cities across the globe that would feature in their virtual album release.

It is said that the album will be released in full in November and will be accompanied by a virtual world tour beginning in Britain next year. To mark the announcement, the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge was illuminated on Thursday night, showing the avatars of the four band members.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney for the state of New South Wales, Stuart Ayres said on Friday the display was a fitting recognition of a band as timeless as Abba.

Ayres said the event will also help position Sydney as a favourite travel destination when Australia’s international borders eventually re-open.

“Vision of the Sydney Harbour Bridge will be beamed around the world to a massive audience, reminding our friends overseas to keep Sydney and NSW top-of-mind as a must-visit destination for when international borders re-open,” he said.

Abba’s return to Sydney marks a return after over four decades. In 1977 the band performed in Sydney in their Australian tour, band members said ever since the city has held a special place in their hearts.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled for Sydney to be part of our global album launch. Sydney has always been a special city to us and we have wonderful memories of the time we spent performing in Australia,” said Abba.

A new album

Abba announced a musical comeback with a new album and a London show featuring their performances captured by digital avatars. The new album will feature songs I Still Have Faith in You and Don’t Shut Me Down.

The band notched up over 400 million album sales over 50 years despite parting ways in 1982 and resolutely resisting all offers to work together again — until now.

“We have made a new album with Abba!” the band’s Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson announced via a video presentation in London, delivering the news fans have waited decades for.

The pop maestros had a string of hits in the 1970s and early 1980s after winning Eurovision in 1974 with Waterloo.

But on Thursday, Ulvaeus and Andersson put an end to the suspense, following hints that something was in the pipeline.

An end to the suspense

After the video announcement, both men appeared in person, dressed in black, for a presentation of the forthcoming album.

“The album is in the can now, it’s done,” said Andersson, describing the group’s return to the studio, against the spectacular backdrop of the view from the top of London’s ArcelorMittal Orbit tower.

“It’s been 40 years, or 39, it was like no time had passed. It was quite amazing,” he said. “We’ve done as good as we could at our age.

The pair looked relaxed and described their reunion as very friendly.

“No imagination could dream up that: to release a new album after 40 years and still be the best of friends”, said Ulvaeus. “It’s the most fun thing you can do: to write songs,” he added.

Digital Abba-tars

The musicians described the process of being transformed into digital avatars using hologram technology for a new show set to launch in London next year.

They described how they were photographed in leotards to create the avatars for the show called ‘Abba Voyage’ which will play at a theatre being built close to the presentation venue in east London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

“We looked ridiculous,” said Andersson. He said the show will feature the group as “digital characters” in 1979 when they were “in their prime”. They will look “perfectly real”, he said.

The show is “technically immensely complicated, the screen, the sound, all the lights”, he added.

It will feature 22 songs, mostly the group’s classic hits, and last 90 minutes, the musicians said, with tickets going on sale later this month.
