Jacob Zuma to remain in hospital

Correctional Services says former President Jacob Zuma will remain in hospital.

Zuma who was serving a 15 month jail sentence for contempt of court after ignoring a Constitutional Court order to appear before the State Capture Commission was granted medical parole on Sunday because of ill-health.

He was admitted to hospital soon after his incarceration on July 8.

Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says the decision was taken after considering Zuma’s medical reports.

Nxumalo says, “There are conditions attached to it that he’ll have to comply with but for now we must indicate that he remains in hospital up until such time that doctors discharge him then he can be taken home where he will continue to receive medical care. But a decision had to be taken looking at the medical reports that he had to be considered for medical parole.”

A statement from the Justice and Correctional Services Department says that the medical parole’s eligibility for the former President “is impelled by a medical report received by the Department of Correctional Services. Apart from being terminally ill and physically incapacitated, inmates suffering from an illness that severely limits their daily activity or self-care can also be considered for medical parole.”

The former President will be expected to abide by some of the conditions during his parole.

“Medical parole placement for Mr Zuma means that he will complete the remainder of the sentence in the system of community corrections, whereby he must comply with a specific set of conditions and will be subjected to supervision until his sentence expires.”

Elite Guinea army unit says it has toppled president

Special forces soldiers appeared on Sunday to have ousted Guinea’s long-serving president, telling the nation they had dissolved its government and constitution and closed its land and air borders.

As the United Nations condemned any takeover by force and the West African region’s economic bloc threatened reprisals, the elite army unit’s head, Mamady Doumbouya, said “poverty and endemic corruption” had driven his forces to remove President Alpha Conde from office.

“We have dissolved government and institutions,” Doumbouya – a former French foreign legionnaire – said on state television, draped in Guinea’s national flag and surrounded by eight other armed soldiers. “We are going to rewrite a constitution together.”

Gunfire erupted near the presidential palace in the capital, Conakry, on Sunday morning. Hours later, videos shared on social media, which Reuters could not immediately authenticate, showed Conde in a room surrounded by army special forces.

Military sources said the president was taken to an undisclosed location and that the forces commanded by Doumbouya – who one of the sources, a close colleague, described as calm and reserved by nature – had made several other arrests.

They included senior government officials, the sources said.

Guinea’s main opposition leader, Cellou Dalein Diallo, denied rumours that he was among those detained.

TAXES AND PROTESTS

Conde won a third term in October after changing the constitution to allow him to stand again, triggering violent protests from the opposition.

In recent weeks the government has sharply increased taxes to replenish state coffers and raised the price of fuel by 20%, causing widespread frustration.

By Sunday evening it was not clear if Doumbouya had taken full control, the defence ministry having issued a statement saying an attack on the presidential palace had been repelled.

But United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he strongly condemned “any takeover of the government by force” and called for Conde’s immediate release.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) threatened to impose sanctions after what its chairman, Ghana’s President Nana Akuffo-Addo, called an attempted coup.

The African Union said it would meet urgently and take “appropriate measures” while the foreign ministry in Nigeria, the region’s dominant power, called for a return to constitutional order.

Videos shared on social media had earlier shown military vehicles patrolling Conakry, and one military source said the only bridge connecting the mainland to the Kaloum neighbourhood, where the palace and most government ministries are located, had been sealed off.

‘THE RICH WERE TAUNTING US’

By mid-afternoon, when the shooting had stopped, residents were venturing back onto the streets of the capital to celebrate the uprising’s apparent success.

A Reuters witness saw pick-up trucks and military vehicles accompanied by motorcyclists honking their horns and cheering onlookers. “Guinea is free! Bravo,” a woman shouted from her balcony.

Alexis Arieff, at the United States Congressional Research Service, said that, while mutinies and coups were nothing new in West Africa, the region had seen “major democratic backsliding” in recent years.

Both Conde and Ivory Coast’s leader have moved the legislative goalposts to extend the clock on their presidencies in the past year, while Mali has experienced two military coups and Chad one.

Guinea has seen sustained economic growth during Conde’s decade in power thanks to its bauxite, iron ore, gold and diamond wealth.

But few of its citizens have seen the benefits, and critics say his government has used restrictive criminal laws to discourage dissent, while ethnic divisions and endemic graft have sharpened political rivalries.

“While the president was proclaiming everywhere that he wanted to govern differently by annihilating corruption, the embezzlement of public funds increased. The new rich were taunting us,” Alassane Diallo, a resident of Conakry, told Reuters.

“It is all this that made it easier for the military.”

SACP in KZN unhappy with the handling of candidate list process

The South African Communist Party (SACP) provincial general-secretary, Themba Mthembu, says he is not happy with how the candidate list process was handled in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mthembu was speaking during the party’s 100 year anniversary celebrations.

At least seven municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal are amongst the 30 mentioned by the ANC that missed the Independent Electoral Commission’s registration deadline for candidates ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

The most affected municipalities in the province are in the Zululand District which has five local municipalities.

Mthembu says the process was full of discrepancies.

“We told the provincial leadership that we as the communist party we are not happy about the list. There is so much corruption that happened during the list process of which it means we don’t even respect our branches, we don’t respect our communities, we don’t respect the African National Congress (ANC) that gave guidelines to choosing a candidate,” explains Mthembu.

Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral Commission is expected to make an announcement on Monday about the programme for the forthcoming local government elections (LGE) after meeting this weekend.

Last month, the Electoral Commission applied to have the elections postponed after an inquiry recommended a delay because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

IEC set to make an announcement on the programme for the forthcoming LGE 2021:

South Africa vs Ghana: Bafana Bafana Starting XI prediction – 6 September 2021

Bafana Bafana starting XI prediction: South Africa got their Fifa World Cup qualifying campaign off to a sluggish start against Zimbabwe but can steal a march on group leaders Ghana on Monday evening.

In the match against Zimbabwe, South Africa were well organised but lacked creativity and execution in the final third.

Centre forward Evidence Makgopa and star man Percy Tau have caught the flak for that performance and while the latter might be safe the former already needs to worry about his place.

Bafana Bafana Starting XI prediction

Skipper Ronwen Williams will definitely start in goal for South Africa having dealt with the limited threat posed by Zimbabwe. He can expect to have a busier evening against the Black Stars though.

In front of Williams, Hugo Broos is unlikely to try and fix what isn’t broken, with Siyanda Xulu and Rushine de Reuck showing great promise as a centre back pairing.

On the flanks Nyiko Mobbie could be in danger of losing his place in favour of someone that offers a bit more going forward, with in-form Sibusiso Mabiliso in the squad.

The central midfield pairing of Mothobi Mvala and Teboho Mokoena is also a promising combination and could ignite further links between Mokoena and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos will need to establish a better link between the midfield and the attack to supply their goal threats with the kind of ball they need. We should see Bongokuhle Hlongwane get a chance from the start ahead of Gift Links.

Broos has made it clear that he doesn’t expect Tau to be at his absolute best given his lack of football, but he should still start ahead of the likes of Sipho Mbule.

A lack of attacking alternatives is likely to see Makgopa lead the line again, however Luther Singh is likely to be replaced by Victor Letsoala on the left.

Bafana Bafana starting XI

Predicted Bafana Bafana Starting XI: Ronwen Williams; Sibusiso Mabiliso, Rushine de Reuck, Siyanda Xulu, Thapelo Morena; Mothobi Mvala, Teboho Mokoena, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Percy Tau, Sepana Letsoalo, Evidence Makgopa.

Confirmed Starting XI: TBA on Monday 6 September
