Heavy rains in Ivory Coast augur large, quality cocoa crop: farmers

Above-average rains last week in most of Ivory Coast’s cocoa-growing regions augur a larger, better-quality October-to-March main crop compared with last year, farmers said on Monday.

The rainy season in Ivory Coast, the world’s top cocoa producer, runs from April to mid-November.

Most farmers said they expect the harvest, which has already begun, to increase gradually from mid-September and be in full swing from October.

In the centre-western region of Daloa and in the central regions of Bongouanou and Yamoussoukro, farmers said they were optimistic as cherelles continued to proliferate on trees thanks to above-average rainfall and sun.

“The main crop will be long and of good quality, because the trees have received enough water,” said Benjamin Allangba, who farms near Daloa, where 41.6 millimetres (mm) fell last week, 12.4 mm above the five-year average.

In the western region of Soubre and in Agboville in the south where rains were also plentiful, farmers said good weather meant the first beans of the main crop were of good quality and harvesting would be strong from October.

“Many pods have ripened,” said Boniface Ballou, who farms near Soubre, where 31.9 mm fell last week, 16 mm above the average.

Rains were below average in the southern region of Divo but farmers said they were optimistic there as well.

In the eastern region of Abengourou, known for the good quality of its beans, farmers said the crop was developing well, with the first beans being smuggled across the border to Ghana to sell for 800 CFA francs per kg, 50 CFA francs above the local farmgate price.

However, in the western region of Man where 82.3 mm fell last week, 43.8 mm above the average, farmers said they feared a third consecutive week of heavy rain could damage the crop.

Weekly average temperatures ranged from 24.7 to 26.9 degrees Celsius.

‘ANC will be more divided going into the local government elections’ – Analyst

Political analyst, Prince Mashile says the ANC will be more divided going into the local government elections.

He says the party’s brand has been damaged and people will be reluctant to vote for them.

Mashile says after the ANC’s NEC Lekgotla, President Cyril Ramaphosa made a promise that the governing party is looking at expanding and extending the Social Relief of Distress grant to cushion the poor and unemployed from the devastation caused by COVID-19.

Mashile says nothing said by Ramaphosa will happen: “Everything that President Cyril Ramaphosa said about the ANC will not happen. He said that the Lekgotla has decided to fight corruption. They will attend to it but I know that they will not end corruption. When it comes to local government elections, I know the ANC is going to get a serious wake up call because the brand of the ANC has been seriously damaged to the extent that I cannot imagine more South Africans to be encouraged to go and vote for the party that is in shambles.”

Heavyweight wins for Ivory Coast, South Africa in World Cup qualifying

Ivory Coast striker Sebastien Haller netted both goals to secure a 2-1 home win over Cameroon while South Africa scored late to beat Ghana in two heavyweight clashes in African World Cup qualifying on Monday.

Both victors took an early advantage in their respective groups where only the winners advance to the final phase of qualifying for Qatar 2022.

Haller netted a 20th minute penalty and added a second nine minutes later as he broke free of the visiting defence to give the Ivorians the halftime lead in the Group D clash Abidjan.

But the home side, who were allowed a small crowd to support them after all other African World Cup qualifiers were ordered to be played behind closed doors, had to endure a nervy finish after missing chances when Cameroon pulled one back.

Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu’s 60th minute penalty handed Cameroon hope before Ivory Coast’s Jean Michael Seri hit the bar with a free kick.

Substitute Christian Kouame might have finished Cameroon off in the last five minutes with just the goalkeeper to beat but fluffed the opportunity.

The Ivorians have four points from their first two matches.

South Africa had a first-half effort from Percy Tau controversially ruled offside and then missed two good chances before Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s 83rd minute winner against a Ghana team without six key English-based players.

The absentees did not travel to Johannesburg because South Africa is on the UK government’s COVID-19 red list and they would have had to quarantine for 10 days on returning to their clubs.

Hlongwane got an inadvertent touch to a cross seven minutes from time to ensure four points for South Africa from their first two Group G matches.

For a second successive game in Group J, Democratic Republic of Congo’s Dieumerci Mbokani scored to give his side the lead only for hosts Benin to pull level before halftime in Cotonou in the 1-1 draw. Benin have four points with the Congolese on two.

Mali head the Group E standings on four points after the opening two rounds after they played out a 0-0 draw away to Uganda earlier on Monday.

Minnows Djibouti, who conceded eight to Algeria last week in Group A, let in another four as Niger beat them 4-2 in Rabat, Morocco. Both countries had to move their home qualifiers to neutral territory because of the poor state of their stadiums.

Djibouti led at halftime but two goals from Victorien Adebayor saw Niger come back to triumph in a section where Burkina Faso host Algeria on Tuesday in Marrakesh.

Kpah Sherman scored the only goal of the game in Douala as Liberia, coached by Englishman Peter Butler, won 1-0 away to the Central African Republic in Group C.

Ofori started in goal for Ghana against Bafana Bafana in the FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday but he had to be taken off in the 75th-minute of the same encounter.

The Bucs goalkeeper injured his thigh after almost gifting Bafana Bafana a goal following his failure to collect an easy cross by Teboho Mokoena.

Ofori was then substituted as he couldn’t continue with the game, and his thigh was heavily strapped from what looked like a muscle pull.

As things stand, the Pirates medical team may have to work around the clock to get Ofori fit for the Swallows game.

But should Ofori fail to recover on time for the original Soweto Derby then the Pirates technical team will have to look to either Wayne Sandilands or Siyabonga Mpontshane.

Neither Sandilands nor Mpontshane has started a competitive match for Pirates this season as Ofori is touted as the club’s No.1.

Premier League gives tribute to Bafana and Leeds United legend Lucas Radebe

The English Premier League’s official account released a tribute video of Bafana Bafana and Leeds United legend Lucas Radebe over the weekend.

This past weekend marked 27 years since Radebe signed for the Leeds in the in the English Premier League from boyhood club Kaizer Chiefs.

27 years to the day

September five was the day Radebe would sign those papers at Leeds and begin his journey at Elland Road, for the prestigious English Premiership side. “Roo” as he was affectionately known as in football circles, had arrived at the club alongside Bafana Bafana teammate and striker the late Phil Masinga.

Ironically the story goes, it was in fact Masinga who the Leeds hierarchy had the greater expectations on to succeed at the club, but the hitman would fail to fire and would soon leave the English Premier League side before he left them after an unconvincing spell.

Radebe on the other hand, overcame adversity and a whole heap of injuries to eventually earn his opportunity at Leeds, and after quickly impressing, then club manager George Graham. The commanding centre back would then go on to become a key component of the “Whites” back line and would eventually earn so much trust from Graham, he made him his captain.

Radebe became a Leeds legend

After a distinguished 11 year spell at the Leeds, Radebe would go on to play 256 games for the club and after staving off advances of a Manchester United transfer interest from Sir Alex Ferguson himself, would leave Yorkshire a club legend.

He left a legacy beyond the club

Earlier this year, Radebe was celebrated with a mural painting by Leeds United fans in the same street he used to call “home” during his time at Leeds. That act in itself, further illustrating how much of an impact the South African made during his time in Yorkshire. Part of the legacy he left behind was the amount of adults who admitted to having their children named Lucas after his first name.

Radebe also has a beer named after him, a bus as well as a bus in Leeds. He is also the motivation behind the name of the popular band Kaiser Chiefs.
