Steve Stricker: Tiger Woods trying ‘to play golf again’

Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker said Wednesday that Tiger Woods is continuing his rehabilitation from a February accident “to get better and try to play golf again.”

Stricker made the comments in a Sirius XM Radio interview at Whistling Straits,Wisconsin, site of the upcoming Ryder Cup.

Stricker said he has talked to Woods “a lot,” acknowledging that the 15-time major champion would not be joining Team USA as an assistant.

“He’s a part of this Ryder Cup family; he won’t be able to be a captain’s assistant this time around just because of his ongoing rehabilitation to try to get better and try to play golf again, and that is going well,” Stricker said in the interview.

“He’s progressing, he’s doing well, things are moving in the right direction.”

The last words from Woods publicly about his recovery came in late May when he said he was focused on “walking on my own.”

Woods, 45, sustained serious injuries after crashing an SUV on February 23 in the Los Angeles County city of Rancho Palos Verdes.

He is recovering from open fractures to his tibia and fibula, which needed a rod inserted to aid healing, and also foot and ankle injuries that needed screws and pins placed to aid in stabilisation.

He was hospitalised for almost a month after the crash.

Woods played three events in the 2020-21 PGA Tour season, most recently the 2020 Masters that was delayed until November, as he was recovering from back surgery.

His career earnings are listed at more than $120 million.

The Ryder Cup begins September 24.

Half of Morocco’s electorate voted in parliamentary elections

Morocco said turnout in Wednesday’s parliamentary election was just over 50%, higher than in 2016 after authorities combined it with local elections that traditionally draw better participation.

New voting rules were expected to make it harder for bigger parties to win as many seats as before, something analysts said could cost the moderate Islamist PJD, which has been the biggest party in the past two parliaments.

The Interior Ministry said final turnout was 50.18%, up from the 43% registered in 2016.

Preliminary results are expected during the night.

Morocco is a constitutional monarchy where the king holds sweeping powers.

He picks the prime minister from the party that wins the most seats in the 395-member parliament and appoints key ministers.

The palace also sets the economic agenda for the North African country of 37 million people and has commissioned a development model that the new government is being asked to implement.

The monarchy’s dominant role means political parties adopt similar platforms focusing on education, health, employment and social welfare.

“Why should I vote? I do not expect voting to improve my situation because politicians care only about themselves, said a worker at a hotel in Rabat who said his name was Khalid.

“I voted for a young man from a party that offers realistic promises to develop this country,” a pensioner, who gave his name as Ibrahim, said as he was leaving a polling station in Rabat.

Despite having been the largest party since 2011, the PJD has failed to stop laws it opposes, including one to bolster the French language in education and another to allow cannabis for medical use.

The new voting rules, seen by PJD leaders as having been introduced specifically to target their majority, change the way seats are allocated, making it harder for large parties to gain as many seats.

In a statement on Wednesday, the PJD accused rivals of violations including buying votes, without providing any details.

Morocco’s economy is expected to grow 5.8% this year after it contracted by 6.8% last year under the combined impact of the pandemic and drought.

Arthur Fraser: ‘I overruled parole board to free Jacob Zuma’

The national commissioner of correctional services, Arthur Fraser, has admitted the Medical Parole Advisory Board did not approve medical parole for former president Jacob Zuma and that he made the decision for him to leave prison.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed this past weekend that Zuma would be leaving prison and serve the remainder of his sentence at his Nkandla home.

Given Fraser’s position and his association with Zuma, it was  not long before people and the likes of Afiforum and the Democratic Alliance (DA) connected the dots and assumed he had a hand in the decision and now it turns out he did.

He confirmed this in an interview on the SABC news programme The Watchdog on Wednesday evening, 8 September 2021.

“I took the decision to place him on medical parole, and I’ve given a host of reasons. The reasons are available. It’s in documentation, and it will be presented to whoever needs to see that. I’m sure parliament will be asking,” he said.

Fraser: Zuma needed ‘specialised treatment’

Arthur Fraser said that when Jacob Zuma entered the Estcourt Correctional Centre, he underwent all kinds of assessments, like any other prisoner does. During this process, Fraser said Zuma then declared his comorbidities. It was at that time that they realised they were dealing with some who was “frail” and needed specialised treatment.

“We then received further reports, medical reports, that indicated that he required specialised treatment and it was only around the third report that we received, where his medical team – the medical team, in conjunction with our team – indicated that he can no longer be kept in our facility because the type of med care required we are not able to provide,” he said.

This is when it was decided to take Zuma to hospital.

“When we are directed by health professionals, we are obligated. It has to be done. You’ll recall that he had gone to hospital because we were advised that the type of care he needed and the type of clinical procedures that needed to be done couldn’t be done in our facility. We then had to move him to a medical healthcare institution, and it’s there that we got further reports. We then got informed that there’s a range of procedures that need to happen, and all of that,”

Political parties allowed to campaign for LGE, must adhere to COVID-19 regulations: Dlamini-Zuma

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma says political parties can campaign for the November 1 local government elections (LGE) but must adhere to COVID-19 regulations.

Dlamini-Zuma was briefing the media earlier today.

She said that consultations with various stakeholders are taking place with regards to the possible lowering of the current alert level three.

“Whether the political parties will campaign of course they will campaign though there may be some restrictions obviously because even when they have a meeting there may be numbers that may be numbers allowed indoors, outdoors, spacing, the masks so yes they can campaign they can go door to door but they must keep to the protocols.”

Dlamini-Zuma announced that the local government elections will take place on 1 November. The date will be officially proclaimed on the 20 September, following the scheduled voter registration weekend later this month.

SA to go the polls on 1 November:

The official proclamation effectively closes the voters roll and therefore voters can still register for the polls until that date.

“After consultation with the IEC, we have come to the determination that this year’s local government will be held on the 1st of November 2021. This is in accordance with the constitution read with the Municipal Structures Act as the Act prescribes that the election be held within 90 days from the end of the five year-term of local government. We will officially proclaim this date on the 20th of September 2021 after the voter registration weekend.”
