SASSA’s R350 grant: Why your application may be DECLINED

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu recently revealed that nine million people submitted applications to receive the R350 social relief of distress (SRD) grant. However, it has since emerged that some of those submissions have been rejected, despite the applicants meeting the criteria.

A quick recap: To be eligible for the R350 social relief grant you need to be:

  • South African citizen/permanent residents/refugees/asylum seekers/holders of special permits

  • Be unemployed

  • Have no alternative source of income or financial support from any other source

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 60

SASSA grant application rejected

Many have taken to social media to express their frustration after being rejected for the R350 grant. There are several reasons for this, including if one is owed by the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or is a recipient of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), regardless of the amount forwarded to you. One NSFAS recipient, who receives R290 a month from the scheme (which is far less than the R350 grant), was also rejected.

Other key factors to be considered – sometimes your application is declined if you have lost your job, but the status doesn’t reflect. SASSA would then conduct a means test.

“Reconsideration applications will be further assessed by checking if there are funds of more than R595 flowing in the client’s bank account. An exception would be if the funds are from a Sassa child-related grant,” said the agency.

SASSA uses information as provided by multiple institutions including UIF, SA Revenue Service, NSFAS and banks among others to check income from alternative sources.

Kartik Aaryan suffers from laryngitis; loses his voice during shoot of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 climax

The shooting of Anees Bazmee’s comedy-horror Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 has turned out to be far more adventurous than was expected. Firstly the pandemic put a brake on the shooting for an entire year. Now during the shooting of the climax of the film Kartik Aaryan got a bout of laryngitis.

Kartik Aaryan suffers from laryngitis; loses his voice during shoot of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 climax

As the shocking news spread across the country, I tried to find out the veracity of the incident.

A source from the film’s core crew confided, “Tabu and Kartik Aaryan were shooting the climax of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. It is a massive undertaking, with lots of drama and action and Kartik had an insane amount of screaming and shouting to do. At the end of it, Kartik just lost his voice. It was frightening. We all panicked.”

Medical assistance was immediately summoned. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the doctors assured Kartik his voice needed some rest, nothing more serious.

Director Anees Bazmee says it was an experience hard to forget. “We were all so charged up. And to see Tabu and Kartik play against each other at such a high dramatic level. Everyone was stunned. Kartik is ready to take risks for a perfect shot. His voice was gone from all the shouting. But he seemed undeterred. Issko kehte hain dedication.”

Interestingly Vidya Balan in Bhoola Bhulaiyaa (2007) had participated in a climax where her dancing and ranting rendered her unconscious.

Sara Ali Khan in Laxman Utekar's next to be produced by Dinesh Vijan?

That Sara Ali Khan is doing her second film with Dinesh Vijan has been doing the rounds for the longest time. But nobody had a clue about which film it would be. Many felt it is Maddock Films' next that stars Ayushmann Khurrana. But we can now tell you that it's something else altogether.

Sara Ali Khan in Laxman Utekar's next to be produced by Dinesh Vijan

A source informed Bollywood Hungama, "Sara had a closed door meeting with Dinesh Vijan and Laxman Utekar, the director of Mimi. It was for Laxman's next which is again in the slice of life space but with a fun, social twist to it. The script was locked few months ago and Dino absolutely loved it. It is again centred around the female protagonist."

Sara will now decide if she wants to do the film or not. "Laxman did want another actress on board but her dates were not available. Now, Sara has liked the narration and is most likely to take it up. Her next project The Immortal Ashwatthama has been put on an indefinite backburner and she definitely needs a film like this more than anybody else."

SHOCKING: Convicted killers escape from jail, kidnap baby in robbery

Two men who were serving sentences for murder at the Leeukop Prison in Sandton, Johannesburg, managed to escape and go on a short-lived crime spree for several hours on Thursday, 9 September 2021.

According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the convicts’ first order of business was robbing a house in Fourways and kidnapping a four-month-old baby from the same home.

“A domestic worker saw them from inside and locked the back door. It is alleged that the suspects kicked the door down, as well as a second door inside the house. They robbed money from the lady of the house and kidnapped her daughter aged four and half months,” said JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minaar.

Convicted murderers re-arrested in Diepsloot

Things soon went downhill for the escaped prisoners: They hijacked a White Toyota double cab and drove towards Diepsloot with another vehicle chasing behind and ended up landing in a ditch.

Minaar says officers who were patrolling in the area spotted the double cab driving at a high speed along the R511 and Plum Street, before the vehicle drove into a ditch.

“Officers then saw members of Diepsloot community attacking the two male occupants. Officers discovered that the two male suspects had escaped from Leeukop Prison, where they were serving sentences of ten years and thirty years for murders which they committed”

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minaar

It wasn’t too long afterwards that the pair was rearrested and detained at the Diepsloot Police Station. The child’s father then took her to Fourways Hospital where she was to undergo some medical evaluations.

“Her condition has not yet been ascertained. Correctional Services were also called to fetch the suspects at the police station,” Minaar further said.

Tunisian president plans to change political system, suspend constitution – Adviser

Tunisian President Kais Saied plans to suspend the constitution and may amend the political system via a referendum, one of his advisers told Reuters on Thursday in the first clear indication of his plans after moves his critics have called a coup.

More than six weeks after Saied seized governing powers, dismissed the prime minister and suspended parliament on July 25, he has still not appointed a new government or made any broader declaration of his long-term intentions.

“This system cannot continue … changing the system means changing the constitution through a referendum, perhaps … the referendum requires logistical preparation,” said Walid Hajjem, an adviser to Saied.

He added that this was the president’s plan, which was at the final stage and was expected to be formally unveiled soon, but he did not expand on what changes Saied was contemplating.

Saied’s intervention has thrust Tunisia into a constitutional crisis, raising concerns over the future of the democratic system it adopted after the 2011 revolution that led to the Arab Spring.

Saied has been widely expected to move to a presidential system of government that would reduce the role of the parliament, something that has been frequently discussed during years of gridlock since the 2014 constitution was agreed.

He has defended his moves as necessary and said they were inline with the constitution, promised to respect Tunisians’ rights and said he will not become a dictator.

However, arrests of parliament members after Saied lifted their immunity and numerous travel bans against prominent people have alarmed some rights advocates.

NEW GOVERNMENT

Both domestic and international forces have pushed for Saied to appoint a government and show how he means to exit the constitutional crisis caused by his intervention.

The head of Tunisia’s human rights league was quoted in a Tunisian newspaper on Thursday as saying that Saied had informed him that a new government would be appointed this week.

Tunisia faces grave economic problems and a looming threat to public finances, and had just started talks with the International Monetary Fund for a new loan programme when Saied ousted the prime minister.

Any further IMF talks could not take place until a new government was installed that could credibly discuss fiscal reforms wanted by foreign lenders.

Years of economic stagnation and declining public services, worsened by political paralysis, have soured many Tunisians on the form of democracy they adopted after the revolution, and Saied’s intervention appeared to have widespread support.

This week ambassadors from the G7 group of rich democracies urged Saied to appoint a government and return Tunisia to a constitutional order in which an elected parliament played a significant role.

Tunisia’s powerful labour union, the UGTT, has also urged him to appoint a government and start dialogue to change the political system.

UGTT officials were not immediately available for comment.

Officials from the largest party in parliament, the moderate Islamist Ennahda, which has been the most vocal opponent of Saied’s moves, were also not immediately available for comment.
