The seasoned 33-year-old played the last of his 70 Tests against Italy in mid-2017 and his international career appeared over.

But Australia coach Dave Rennie threw him a lifeline ahead of the first Bledisloe Cup Test in New Zealand last month, when he called him up to help put his relatively young squad through their paces.

Japan-based Quade Cooper wasn’t selected for the three demoralising defeats to the All Blacks but with an experienced Springboks looming in the Rugby Championship round three on the Gold Coast on Sunday, Rennie has turned to the veteran flyhalf.

He gets his chance with James O’Connor still not fully match fit and young No 10 Noah Lolesio struggling with his kicking game and dropped.

“We’re thrilled for Quade that he’s earned another opportunity to pull on the gold jersey for his country,” said Rennie, adding that he had been “outstanding” in training.

“He’s had a really positive impact since joining the group, put pressure on us as selectors and he’s excited to get out there and perform on Sunday night.”

Skipper Michael Hooper, meanwhile, will equal George Gregan’s record for most Tests as captain when he leads the side out for the 59th time at Cbus Super Stadium.

“He’s been in phenomenal form and to equal George Gregan’s record as the most Tests as captain of Australia is a testament to his leadership and resilience,” said Rennie.

Centre Samu Kerevi, who was called up for his first match since the 2019 World Cup in the 38-21 loss to New Zealand in Perth last weekend, keeps his place, as does fullback Tom Banks despite poor recent form.

COVID-19 vaccines: South African trials on children to get underway

About 2 000 children in South Africa will be vaccinated against COVID-19, as part of a global trial by China’s Sinovac Biotech.

The trial kicks off at the at the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) in Pretoria on Friday, 10 September 2021, where the first child will be vaccinated.

The trial targets children aged from six months to 17 and will test the efficacy of two doses of CoronaVac vaccine against confirmed symptomatic COVID-19 cases in children and adolescents Efficacy will also be evaluated against hospitalisation and severe Covid-19 cases.

According to the Numolux Group, the participants in the trial will receive 2 doses of vaccine or placebo 28 days apart.

“Any confirmed COVID-19 case will be followed by the investigators until resolution. Whole viral genome sequencing to detect mutations or variants of concern among all the confirmed COVID-19 cases during the trial will be done. Interim analysis will be done when 47 COVID-19 cases have been reported,” it said.

“Safety will be evaluated in terms of solicited local and systemic adverse events during 7 days following vaccination and of unsolicited adverse events during 28 days post-vaccination. Occurrence and relationship of serious adverse events will be monitored from first dose to 12 months after the last dose”

The Numolux Group

SAHPRA approves Sinovac’s child vaccination trial

The study worldwide will enroll 14 000 children and adolescents in various pediatric age group cohorts across 5 countries including, Chile, Philippines, Malaysia and Kenya.

The trial has already been given the greenlight by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

“This study has public health importance globally because a vaccine that prevents COVID-19 disease and transmission in pediatrics would be a crucial tool to assist in curbing the pandemic. Although children and adolescents have a milder form of the disease than adults, they remain susceptible to infection and severe manifestations across all ages”

The Numolux Group

All this comes as government had said it was looking into vaccinating children as soon as adults have received their jabs. So far just over 14 million vaccines have been administered across the country.

Emma Raducanu to face Leylah Fernandez in historic all-teen US Open final

British 18-year-old qualifier Emma Raducanu and Canadian 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez completed astonishing runs to their historic first Grand Slam final on Thursday at the US Open.

Raducanu became the first qualifier to ever reach a Grand Slam final, and the youngest Slam finalist in 17 years, by ousting Greek 17th seed Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-4.

“I’m in the final and I can’t actually believe it,” Raducanu said.

Fernandez, a 73rd-ranked left-hander, beat second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-4, for her third Open win over a top-five rival, a feat not seen at a Slam since Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2012.

“Now I can say I’ve done a pretty good job of achieving my dreams,” Fernandez said.

In a real-life epic as amazing as any fairy tale, the teen prodigies will meet on Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where one of them will claim her first Grand Slam title.

“Is there any expectation?” Raducanu said.

“I’m a qualifier so technically on paper there’s no pressure on me.”

It’s the first Slam final between teens since 17-year-old Williams beat 18-year-old Martina Hingis at the 1999 US Open, and just the eighth all-teen Slam final in the Open era (since 1968).

“I just want to play a final,” Fernandez said.

“I’m going to enjoy my victory and worry about it tomorrow.”

Raducanu is the youngest Slam finalist since 17-year-old Maria Sharapova won at Wimbledon in 2004.

She became only the second woman ranked outside the top 100 to reach a US Open final after unranked Kim Clijsters came out of retirement and won the 2009 US Open.

“Today I wasn’t thinking about anyone else except for myself,” Raducanu said.

Raducanu is trying to become the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977 and the first British woman to win the US Open since Wade in 1968.

Wade and British legend Tim Henman were watching.

“Tim is such a big inspiration,” said Raducanu.

“He has been helping me, telling me take one point at a time. You have to stay in the moment and can’t get ahead of yourself.”

Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, had earlier ousted defending champion Naomi Osaka and fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina before Sabalenka, 23, become her third top-five victim.

“I had opportunities but I didn’t use them in the key moments,” Sabalenka said.

“I didn’t play well. She deserved this win.”

Raducanu could become the first US Open champion not to lose a set since Serena Williams in 2014.

Raducanu saved three break points in her opening service game then broke to lead 2-0. Sakkari double faulted to hand the teen a 4-0 edge and she took the first set in 36 minutes, aided by Sakkari’s 17 unforced errors.

An errant Sakkari forehand in the third game of the second set handed Raducanu the only break she needed as she advanced after 84 minutes on an overhead smash.

Fernandez, never deeper than the third round in six prior Slam starts, showed the mental toughness preached by her father-coach Jorge in the tie-breaker.

Sabalenka netted a forehand with a wide-open court to hand Fernandez a 3-2 edge. The teen never trailed after that, winning the last four points to claim the first set in 53 minutes.

“That’s years and years of work and tears and blood and sacrifice,” said Fernandez of her mental fortitude.

The Ashe stadium music director played the Eric Clapton song “Layla” as the crowd roared when she took the set.

“I have no idea (how I won),” said Fernandez.

“I’d say it’s thanks to the New York crowd. They helped me. They cheered for me. They never gave up.”

Fernandez sent a forehand long to surrender a break in the ninth game and Sabalenka held at love to take the second set.

In the third, Fernandez held to 5-4 and Sabalenka crumbled with the match on the line, issuing back-to-back double faults to 0-40 and sending a forehand long – her 52nd unforced error – to fall after two hours and 21 minutes.

“I don’t know how I got that last point in but I’m glad it was and I’m glad I’m in the finals,” Fernandez said.

Results from Thursday’s matches at the US Open (x denotes seed):

Women

Semi-finals

Leylah Fernandez (CAN) bt Aryna Sabalenka (BLR x2) 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 6-4

Emma Raducanu (GBR) bt Maria Sakkari (GRE x17) 6-1, 6-4

Matric Rage Festival to expand to Margate

The famous Rage Festival, a post-matric celebration, has announced Margate as its new location for the 2022 festival.

MARGATE IS THE NEW LOCATION FOR THE 2022 MATRIC RAGE FESTIVAL

In a statement, it said the coastal town of Margate on the KZN South Coast will be included as a new location for the 2022 Rage Festival, with organisers prioritising safety in all decision-making.

The week-long event is expected to take place around the end of November or the start of December 2022, depending on the matric examination timetable.

Greg Walsh, CEO of Rage Festival Group said the matric rage festivals had enjoyed a successful 19-year history in Ballito, 11 years in Jeffreys Bay and 22 years in Plettenberg Bay.

“They have become synonymous with world-class production, unrivalled safety and the best musicians South Africa and the world has to offer.

“The festivals have earned their status as a rite of passage for South Africa’s matrics and students, with events booked up a year in advance – year after year.”

ALSO READ: Strap in, matrics! Plett Rage will go ahead, but there’s a catch…

He furthermore said their recent engagement with the people of Margate has been terrific.

“The town has its objectives clearly defined, and there is a whole community working tirelessly and investing deliberately towards a very bright future. The main beach area of Margate offers Rage Festival a unique platform to create a walking festival experience yet unseen in our history.”

Within 400 metres of the main festival, beach sites are multiple, freshly-upgraded hotels, new restaurants and bars, and a community willing to close roads and welcome the matric class of 2022 safely for the week of their lives.

Walsh also said that in addition to the benefits for the incoming visitors, Rage Festivals create part-time employment and generate significant funding for the local tourism economy.

“One report indicated that the festivals attract around 15 000 students, with each one spending between R8 000 and R15 000 during their stay, bringing in around R250 million to the region.”

Last year amid the global pandemic these festival made headlines for all the wrong reasons and left South Africans when over 900 COVID-19 cases were linked to the event.

It was clear that these festivals disregarded all COVID-19 health protocols, creating several super-spreader events across the country.

Plettenberg Bay, Johannesburg, and Jeffery’s Bay, and KZN were all affected.

THE 2021 MATRIC RAGE WILL GO AHEAD BUT WITH NEW RULES

The orginisers last month announced that this year’s rage festival will go ahead but that all matrics interested in attending the event will have to be vaccinated to attend.

The school-leavers will also have to provide a negative COVID-19 test done no longer than 72 hours before the event.

The festival’s organisers have said that they will adhere to strict COVID-19 restrictions set by the Department of Health.

“Upon arrival, organisers will test each Rager with a rapid antigen test before they receive a wristband. Due to Plett Rage being a multi-day event, we will also enforce another rapid antigen test before Ragers return home”, said the organisers of the festival.

Founder of the Plett Rage festival Ronen Klugman noted that everyone from the attendees to the staff and suppliers would be tested for COVID-19.

All Blacks make a ton of changes – and pick a NEW skipper – for Argentina clash

New Zealand coach Ian Foster has warned Brodie Retallick to expect a tough workout from Argentina when the veteran lock leads the All Blacks for the first time on Sunday, 12 September in the Rugby Championship.

Kick-off is at 09:05 SA time.

READ | QUADE COOPER EARNS SHOCK RECALL TO FACE THE SPRINGBOKS

Foster handed the captain’s armband to Retallick for the clash on Australia’s Gold Coast after Ardie Savea suffered a head knock while leading New Zealand to victory against Australia last week.

The coach also made six changes to his starting line-up, saying he wanted the team to be fresh and excited about facing Los Pumas.

Mindful of Argentina’s shock win over the All Blacks in Perth last year, Foster said there would be no complacency in the New Zealand camp.

Argentina’s historic 25-15 victory last November followed a pandemic-disrupted build-up and Mario Ledesma’s men have ensured a similarly disjointed road to Sunday’s match.

They played a draining European tour before travelling to South Africa for two Championship Tests, then underwent two weeks in quarantine in Australia.

“They’ve had a heck of a build-up … but we learned last year that when they spend a lot of time together it really gels them and unifies them,” Foster said.

“We’re expecting a really torrid game.”

READ | MARIUS VAN DER WESTHUIZEN TO BLOW CURRIE CUP FINAL

Retallick leads the side after Savea was omitted as a precaution along with Codie Taylor, even though both players passed concussion tests.

Sam Whitelock and Aaron Smith, who have also captained the side this year as regular skipper Sam Cane recovers from chest surgery, are both on paternity leave and did not travel to Australia.

Retallick spent last year playing in Japan but Foster said the towering lock had lost none of the qualities that have earned him 86 Test caps.

READ | JORDIE BARRETT CLEARED TO PLAY AFTER RED CARD SHOCKER OVERTURNED

“We’ve seen him come back into the black jersey and almost start where he left off,” he said.

“He’s happy, he’s playing well and he’s committed to leading well.”

Luke Jacobson comes in for Savea, while Asafo Aumua earns his first Test start replacing Taylor as hooker.

He will line up in the front row alongside Karl Tu’inukuafe, who was promoted from the bench to take George Bower’s spot as loosehead prop.

In the backs, winger Sevu Reece, centre George Bridge and scrumhalf TJ Perenara replace Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane and Brad Weber, respectively.

Prop Joe Moody makes his first squad appearance of the year after foot surgery.

Jordie Barrett returns at fullback after having his red card for dangerous play against Australia rescinded after a judicial hearing found it was accidental.

“Clearly it’s a very stressful time going through a judiciary process, you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Foster said.

“But he’s a relieved man and ready to go.”

TEAMS:

New Zealand

15 Jordie Barrett, 14 Sevu Reece, 13 Anton Lienert-Brown, 12 David Havili, 11 George Bridge, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 TJ Perenara, 8 Luke Jacobson, 7 Dalton Papalii, 6 Akira Ioane, 5 Scott Barrett, 4 Brodie Retallick (captain), 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Asafo Aumua, 1 Karl Tu’inukuafe

Substitutes: 16 Samisoni Taukei’aho, 17 Joe Moody, 18 Tyrel Lomax, 19 Tupou Vaa’i, 20 Ethan Blackadder, 21 Brad Weber, 22 Damian McKenzie, 23 Rieko Ioane
