Video of Cape Town teen’s brutal assault at Clifton 4th Beach doing the rounds

A video of a brutal attack on a teenager recently started circulating as matriculants around Cape Town began their annual post-valedictory celebrations on the beach when the incident occurred.

THE TEENAGERS GATHERED ON FRIDAY EVENING AT THE BEACH

It is known in the area that teenagers gather at the beach every year to celebrate their last day of school before final exams commence.

In the video, a teenager lying on the ground is brutally kicked in the face and attacked while other teenagers watch and cheer.

The City of Cape Town’s (COCT) Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith reportedly told Cape {town} Etc that the incident was a minor scuffle between teenagers that have been gathering on the beach.

“The rumours about the boy that died are untrue. Officers offered medical assistance to the boy but he denied it, as well as opening a case.”

Smith reportedly further mentioned that the COCT’s law enforcement agencies will be on high alert to confiscate alcohol and to prevent incidents like this from happening.

Meanwhile police spokesperson provincial commander, Colonel Andre Traut reportedly said the Camps Bay Police and other law enforcement agencies responded to an alleged fight at the beach on Friday evening.

While the videos show the boy being badly beaten up, he chose not to open a case of assault.

“It was established that an individual was assaulted, but he refused to lodge an official complaint,” Traut said.

While various people on Twitter have commented, saying the assaulted matric pupil has died, Traut confirmed that this is untrue.

Police continued to monitor the situation where a large number of young people gathered, and no further incidents were reported.

Vaccinated fans to get FREE ENTRY for next week’s Bafana Bafana match

After more than a year-and-a-half of being locked out of stadiums, football fans will finally be allowed to watch a game in-person from next week. The FNB Stadium in Johannesburg is set to host a World Cup Qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Ethiopia, and vaccinated citizens will be granted free entry to the event.

Fans are back! Bafana Bafana vs Ethiopa will have a crowd

However, it’s understood that the crowd will be exclusively made up of the vaccinated. Earlier this week, President Ramaphosa confirmed that the upper limit on outdoor gatherings had risen to 2 000. That’s just about enough to cobble together some sort of atmosphere, even in a 90 000-seater stadium.

All COVID-19 protocols will be in place at the FNB, but this move represents a key moment in South Africa’s vaccination drive. Cyril himself said that not enough jabs were being administered in Mzansi at the moment, and this ‘general hesitancy’ has spurred the government on to develop a so-called ‘vaccine passport’.

Vaccinated fans ONLY, free entry for the jabbed at South Africa World Cup qualifier

Those who can show proof of vaccination will soon be the only ones who can enter sporting events, attend certain bars and restaurants, and participate in society as normal. The vaccine passport proposal is a controversial one, but Ramaphosa says he is willing to do ‘whatever it takes’ to get the national vaccination rate up to 70%.

SAFA, meanwhile, released a statement on their plans to grant free entry to fans for Bafana Bafana vs Ethiopia on Tuesday 12 October – revealing that the upcoming Soweto Derby will also be used to promote the vaccination drive.

“With regards to fans returning to the stadiums, SAFA NEC resolved that football should play a major role in the vaccination drive. Meanwhile, only fans that are vaccinated will get free entry into the forthcoming Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Ethiopia that is scheduled to take place at FNB Stadium on 12 October.”

“The NSL has resolved to use the Soweto Derby to also encourage mass vaccination drive. The more people vaccinated, the more the economic opportunities are opened for those selling their products. Taxi drivers who take fans to the stadiums will also be encouraged to vaccinate and football will engage various taxi associations to work together.”

Drivers alert: Government is introducing new driving rules from October

The new driving rules have been developed and communicated by The Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) on 1 October 2021. In a nutshell, it will all be about monitored driving behaviour.

The project started on a smaller scale with phase 1 in July 2021, before RTIA confirmed there has been enough progress to launch a national rollout of the system called phase 2 on Friday 01 October.

THE NEW DRIVING RULES SYSTEM

The structure is called the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) system. Drivers and fleet operators will be at risk of losing performance points when found guilty. The punishments might include suspension or cancellation of licenses, professional driving permits, or operator cards.

“The demerit point system will provide for an easy and objective mechanism of identifying habitual infringers so that the applicable penalties can be imposed,” Minister of Transport Joe Maswanganyi said.

“Those that continue to break the laws will find themselves ultimately losing their driving licences through suspensions and cancellations of their driver’s licenses.”

PHASE 1 AND PHASE 2 OF THE AARTO

The transport authority said Phase 1 of the Aarto, which started in July until September 2021, saw the RTIA increase its national footprint through the launch of seven service outlets and digital services such as the Aarto website and the rollout of the Aarto mobile application.

As then there is Phase 2 coming up next. Phase 2 will run between October and December 2021, where the Aarto system will come online in 67 local and metropolitan municipal areas.

“Phase 1, from July to September 2021, has seen the RTIA increase its national footprint through the implementation of seven (7) AARTO service outlets and online services such as the AARTO website and deployment of the AARTO mobile application,” RTIA said.

“Phase 2 in the period between October and December 2021 will witness the proclamation of the AARTO Act 46, of 1998 as amended in 67 Local and Metropolitan Municipal Areas coming online with the AARTO process.

“This is accompanied by the appointment of the independent Appeals Tribunal and the introduction of electronic service of documents. Implementation partners in the AARTO value chain are all on board as the preparations for the full-scale national rollout are intensifying.”

Man arrested after his FB post selling a catalytic converter ended up in front of police

A man selling a catalytic converter on Facebook Marketplace left a large bag of methamphetamine, and a syringe on the coffee table in the background of the picture he posted.

THE DRUGS AND THE SYRINGE CAN BE SEEN CLEARLY IN THE BACKGROUND

This photo quickly caught the attention of local authorities.

The Stone County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri said in a post on Facebook:

“Last night, one of our Stone County residents posted a catalytic converter for sale on Marketplace. Apparently, he must have been under the influence because, in the background of the picture he posted, he left his large bag of meth and syringe on the coffee table,” Sheriff Doug Rader said in the post published on 29 September.

According to Rader he was alerted to the post by a citizen and passed on the information to a detective.

“Today, we arrived at this gentleman’s house with a search warrant. You can imagine his surprise!! He still had 48 grams of meth and a pistol that he is forbidden to own! We have now provided him a new place to stay. Sorry folks, his catalytic converters are not for sale right now,” the sheriff’s post said.

“Take note, if you are selling items on social media, make sure your drugs are not in the background!” Sheriff Rader added in the post.

James Anthony Kertz was being held in the county jail with no bond, Sherri Roe, a criminal data technician with the sheriff’s office, CNN reported.

Rugby Championship 2021: FIVE things we learned

New Zealand won a pulsating southern hemisphere Rugby Championship this year, with Argentina picking up the wooden spoon.

Here are five things we learnt from the Covid-hit tournament:

BATTLING BOKS

South Africa saved their best till last and proved they were not bound to rigidly follow the relentless kicking script that had led them to three successive defeats.

Their enthralling 31-29 victory over New Zealand in their final match showed they could dominate up front and, while Faf de Klerk’s kicking game remained a valuable weapon in their armoury, could also take the All Blacks on out wide.

Coach Jacques Nienaber also outsmarted the All Blacks with his use of the bench, replacing his entire front row just before half-time, a tactic that turned the match.

“The moment we felt the first group has done their job, we will bring on the second group,” he said.

The performance may have come too late to prevent the All Blacks winning the Rugby Championship, but it underscored why the Springboks are the reigning world champions – and have again overtaken New Zealand as the number one ranked side.

NEW ZEALAND ASCENDENT

The All Blacks put a minor form wobble last year behind them as they won the Rugby Championship with a match to spare despite missing a host of first-team regulars, again highlighting the depth of New Zealand rugby.

Ian Foster’s coaching staff have bedded in and the team look in ominous form despite a last-gasp defeat to South Africa on Saturday, partly because they appear to have finally managed to counter the rush defence that has troubled them since 2017.

Their only real drawback has been an occasional lapse in discipline.

“It just shows we’ve got a little bit of learning to do but I’m intensely proud of a campaign that we’ve taken one big step forward but we’ve got a few more to take,” said Foster.

“I’ve got no doubt we’ve grown considerably. I’m very proud of the way the guys have handled the last five to six weeks.”

COOPER MASTERSTROKE

Questions were being asked about coach Dave Rennie’s job after Australia lost three times to the All Blacks in the space of a month earlier this year.

But in a masterstroke – some might say a gamble – he shocked the rugby world by re-calling playmaker Quade Cooper after a four-year hiatus to stop the rot and was handsomely rewarded.

With a trusty boot and 70 Tests of experience, Cooper marshalled the backline and led Australia past South Africa 28-26 in a huge confidence booster that sent them on a four-game win streak – their first ever in the championship.

They have also uncovered a new star in classy winger Andrew Kellaway, who ended as the tournament’s top try scorer with seven in his debut season.

“We’re not trying to think too far ahead. We are still trying to grow our game,” said Rennie, whose re-building mission is starting to take shape leading into the 2023 World Cup.

Now ranked three in the world, they head to Japan this month – before a European tour against Scotland, England and Wales – believing they are once more a force to be reckoned with.

PUMAS’ PAIN

For the second year running, Argentina made a huge sacrifice to play the Rugby Championship with the team away from family on a months-long tour that also took in South Africa.

But they earned little reward, again proving to be the weak link with Mario Ledesma’s men crashing in all six games despite gallant defensive performances.

They also found themselves embroiled in a scandal with six players banned from their last match after breaching Covid rules.

With star playmaker Nicolas Sanzhez mostly sidelined through injury, they struggled to score, managing just five tries in six games while conceding 195 points, leaving them with plenty to ponder ahead of November games against France, Italy and Ireland.

Despite this, Ledesma said his team should be proud.

“After two months of a lot of effort and sacrifices… the boys have showed character,” he said.

IS BIGGER BETTER?

Expanding the Rugby Championship has long been mooted to help grow the game, and Michael Hopper, for one, believes Japan could be a good fit.

The Top League has seen tremendous growth and the Wallabies captain had a stint there this year to get a taste, alongside current Test teammates Sean McMahon, Samu Kerevi and Quade Cooper.

“It’d be great to have Japan involved in some capacity… there’s so much water under the bridge to go but in terms of seeing a lot more of the Cherry Blossoms, it’d be great,” he said when asked about having them in the tournament.

Australian media have suggested Fiji should also be considered to make it a Six Nations, like its northern hemisphere counterpart, given a Fijian side will join Super Rugby next season.

Rugby Australia chief Andy Marinos told reporters this year a measured approach was merited.

“The Japan – or any expansion – opportunity would be something we’d look at post the World Cup (in 2023],” he said.
