Tshegofatso Pule murder: Trial against Ntuthuko Shoba begins

The murder trial against Ntuthuko Shoba, the alleged mastermind behind Tshegofatso Pule’s savage killing, is expected to get under on Monday morning, 4 October 2021, in the High Court in Johannesburg.

This is nearly two weeks after the same court denied Shoba his third bail attempt. Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi found that Shoba failed to prove there were extraordinary circumstances that warranted him being granted bail ahead of the trial.

Pule was murdered in June 2020. The heavily-pregnant woman’s body was discovered hanging from a tree in Roodepoort. Muzikayise Malephane, a 31-year-old man pleaded guilty to her killing and subsequently entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the State.

It is believed that she was shot first and then hanged.

How Ntuthuko Shoba was implicated

The convicted killer revealed that Ntuthuko Shoba had offered him as much as R70 000 to murder Tshegofatso Pule. It is believed that Shoba had wanted to hide her pregnancy from his wife.

News of Pule’s senseless killing sent shockwaves across the country (including anti-gender-based violence organisations) and once again placed focus on the alarming femicide rates.

When the case was first heard in court, the state presented Whatsapp messages between Shoba and Pule, which showed he had wanted her to get rid of her baby.

“The WhatsApp messages are proof that the applicant has been absent most of the time, hiding behind work and at times his (other) girlfriend. In actual fact, from the deceased’s WhatsApp messages, it is clear that she sent the applicant a message saying that she did not want to have another abortion,” State prosecutor Paseka Temeki told the court.

Shoba is currently being held at Johannesburg Prison, much to his dismay. This is because he had initially asked the court to stay at Krugersdorp Prison, where he was taken after his arrest. Shoba had claimed that Malephane, who is serving his sentence at Johannesburg Prison, sent him death threats and feared for his life.

Libya’s foreign minister confirms departure of some foreign fighters

Libya’s foreign minister said on Sunday that some foreign fighters have left the country as the unity government seeks to marshal international help to withdraw the many who remain.

“The reports are correct. There is a very modest start,” Najla Mangoush said at a news conference in Kuwait when asked whether some foreign fighters had been removed. “We are still seeking a larger and comprehensive organization for the exit of mercenaries,” she said.

The warring sides brought in mercenaries, including via Russia’s Wagner group, from Syria, Sudan and Chad among other countries, the United Nations has said.

The ceasefire agreement called for all foreign mercenaries to be withdrawn within three months of its being signed a year ago.

The head of Libya’s presidency council said last month it would take part in a conference to ensure “unified, consistent” international support and restore a sense of Libyan leadership and ownership over the country’s future.

But Mohammed al-Menfi also warned of “serious challenges” that could undermine national elections planned for December 24.

Kenya’s Jepkosgei upsets Kosgei to win London Marathon

Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei won a thrilling women’s London Marathon on Sunday in two hours, 17 minutes and 43 seconds as world record holder and defending champion Brigid Kosgei faded late in the race to finish outside the podium places.

Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia was a comfortable winner of the elite men’s race in a time of 2:04.01, crossing the line 27 seconds ahead of Kenya’s Vincent Kipchuma with Ethiopian Mosinet Geremew third.

Jepkosgei, the reigning New York Marathon champion, smashed her personal best of 2:18.40 on her debut in the British capital, becoming the seventh fastest woman in history.

The 28-year-old, who was a pacemaker in London two years ago, finished 15 seconds ahead of Ethiopian Degitu Azimeraw whose compatriot Ashete Bekere came third.

“Some years back I was pacing (in) London so it was better preparation,” Jepkosgei said. “And the day (winning the race) has finally come… I’m privileged to be in London.”

Kosgei, competing eight weeks after claiming silver at the Tokyo Games, was aiming for a third consecutive victory in London. The 27-year-old rallied briefly but finished fourth in 02:18.40.

The marathon, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in April, returned to its traditional route from Black heath to The Mall for the first time in over two years.

More than 36,000 competitors joined some of the world’s best in the mass participation event and up to 40,000 took part virtually, organisers said.

Only elite races took place last year on a course around St James’s Park, with amateurs last competing in 2019.
