Al Ahly continued their preparations for their next game after the international break by welcoming Bafana Bafana international Percy Tau back to full training.

Tau was pictured with his new Al Ahly teammates on Sunday, in his first training session since picking up an injury early on in his life in Egypt.

Tau recently moved to Red Devils from Brighton

The player recently moved to Al Ahly during the previous transfer window and while the club have already played games this season, Tau has since been prevented from making his long awaited debut for the Red Devils due to a chronic injury.

It was first suggested that Tau would be out for a couple of months but news started circulating last week that he could in fact make a return to CAF Champions League winners’ training all of two weeks earlier than expected. The player’s injury is the reason why he was eventually omitted from Hugo Broos’ latest Bafana Bafana squad, despite making the preliminary squad earlier for the back to back Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia

In fact, the situation around his injury got so tense that Al Ahly had reportedly threaten to terminate Tau’s contract if he decided to go against the club’s wishes and attended the Bafana Bafana camp. That particular threat seems to have worked, as Broos opted to oblige and subsequently leave his talisman in Egypt.

Pictured all smiles in training

However, the situation regarding Tau did not seem that tense anymore, as the tricky winger spotted back in full training with his Al Ahly teammates and all smiles in the Cairo sun. “The return of our player Percy Tau to participate in group training” said a translated caption on their Facebook account.

SASSA R350 grant: Systems strengthened to tackle fraud

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says it has tightened its systems to prevent fraud in the current roll-out of its special R350 grant.

The agency’s spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi it is important to clamp down on the crime, partly because the agency will have to account for every R350 grant awarded.

“We think our system in this current cycle is very tied up because we have managed to make sure that must get the SASSA R350 grant do get it and I think if we follow up on that, those who are in the wrong will get arrested because the intention here is to make sure we do not necessarily give people who don’t deserve this amount of money,” he said to eNCA.

SASSA R350 grant fraud being probed

Letsatsi says SASSA’s I.T system has been upgraded and is now able to pick up and identify those who had tried to defraud the agency, including by applying for the R350 grant, even though they know they are not eligible for it.

A reported 177 000 public servants have wrongfully received the R350 grant, which the agency is currently investigating.

According to the agency, since its special R350 grant was rolled out in August, more than 14 million applications have been submitted. More than 8.3 million have been approved, while over 5.6 million received their monies by September 2021.

The SASSA R350 grant was established at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to help the country’s most marginalised navigate the economic devastation spurred by the respiratory illness. Since its roll-out, there have been growing calls, particularly from labour unions and federations, for the grant to not only be increased, but to also continue beyond the pandemic.”

Mangaung Concerned Community hopeful its grievances will be prioritised

Civic movement, the Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC), is hopeful that its grievances will now be prioritised.

The MCC met with African National Congress (ANC) Deputy President David Mabuza during his campaign trail in Bloemfontein.

MCC and other civic organisations raised concerns over the irregular appointments of the Mangaung metro police.

The launch of the metro police was postponed but the officers have been seen operating in the city.

Civic organisations have called for the money allocated for metro police to be diverted to service delivery.

MCC spokesperson Themba Zweni says there will be further meetings on the matter.

“The ANC in the Free State has confirmed that their decision taken on Wednesday still stands and will be implemented as such. And that those who have defied the instructions they received from the leadership action will be taken against them. We are pleased by the fact that the Deputy President has emphasised the fact that the organisation cannot be compromised for the sake of individuals,” adds Zweni.

In August, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Mangaung Metro Municipality demanded answers following the appointment of metro police officers who allegedly have criminal records.

The party said millions of rands have been spent on the appointment process since 2016.

Ramaphosa campaigns in Eastern  Cape

Meanwhile, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC wants to take back control of the Nelson Mandela Metro.

Ramaphosa encouraged residents of the Wells Estate where he was campaigning in Gqeberha to go out in numbers to vote as the ANC wants to win the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

The ANC President further mentioned that the party wants to return good governance to the  Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, saying there are potholes, some areas are dirty and others have no electricity and people are required to pay connection fees.

Cosatu disappointed for not being consulted during Free State cabinet reshuffle

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the Free State has echoed the South African National Civic Organisation’s (Sanco) sentiments that alliance partners have not been consulted on the provincial cabinet reshuffle.

They say they learned through the media that Premier Sisi Ntombela has made changes to her cabinet.

Cosatu provincial secretary Monyatso Mahlatsi says they are disappointed.

He says the federation will comment further after engaging with the ANC to understand what informed the changes.

“We learnt over the media that there have been changes in the provincial executive of the government of the Free State. We are very disappointed by the agency in particular. Because we have not been informed.”

“We have discussed this [concern] with the ANC previously and there was a commitment that such changes [reshuffle] will never be made without us as the federation being taken into confidence,” says Mahlatsi.

Last week, former Free State African National Congress (ANC) Chairperson Sam Mashinini was fired as MEC for Police, Roads and Transport.

Reports of the cabinet reshuffle have been doing the rounds following a leaked WhatsApp conversation by Ntombela, which painted a picture of strained relations with Mashinini.

Mashinini has been on sick leave for the last three months.

His department’s HOD, Sipho Matakati, was suspended in May for allegedly failing to ensure that road infrastructure projects were properly managed.

The video below is reporting on the reshuffle:
