WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram begin recovery after unprecedented crash

Shortly before midnight on Monday 4 October, the global public was relieved of the most extensive social media exile in history, with glimmers of life beginning to emerge on the Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram apps.

This followed an immense – and unprecedented – six hour period in which the entire world found itself without access to the social media sites for over five-hours.

In that time, it became increasingly evident that these sites have become critical resources in our daily existence, and the potential consequences of a sustained social media absence grew in menace, with livelihoods, health services and communication infrastructures suddenly made inaccessible.

WhatsApp slowly returning to service, Facebook CTO ‘sorry’

Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer confirmed shortly after midnight South African time that the services were” slowly coming back online, “but may take some time to get to 100%”.

“To every small and large business, family, and individual who depends on us, I’m sorry,” he said in a tweet.

Instagram released an update shortly afterwards, saying in a tweet that the app is “slowly but surely coming back now”.

“Thanks for dealing with us and sorry for the wait,” they said.

WhatsApp issued their apology about an hour later.

“Apologies to everyone who hasn’t been able to use WhatsApp today. We’re starting to slowly and carefully get WhatsApp working again. Thank you so much for your patience. We will continue to keep you updated when we have more information to share.”

Cause of crashes unclear

Earlier on Monday evening, following a spree of announcements from the affected sites via their Twitter accounts that the crash was being investigated – Schroepfer said that the technicians desperately trying to restore the sites to service were dealing with “network issues”.

“Sincere apologies to everyone impacted by outages of Facebook powered services right now,” he said in a tweet.

“We are experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore as fast as possible.”

The company did not disclose the cause of the outage, and according to the NY Times, security experts said that the problem most likely stemmed “from a misconfiguration of Facebook’s server computers”, which were not letting people connect to its sites like Instagram and WhatsApp.

This is a developing story.

Is Facebook gone FOREVER? Concerns over ‘deleted master code’ raised

Well, you don’t see this every day: Coding sleuths, currently occupying the Twitter space due to the outages on other social media sites, believe they have uncovered something devastating in regards to Facebook and its master code.

Is Facebook still down? WhatsApp, Instagram also offline

Facebook and its Instagram and WhatsApp platforms were hit by a massive outage Monday, impacting potentially tens of millions of people as users flocked to other networks to sound off.

Facebook has not communicated on the possible cause of the outage, but cyber security experts noted they had found signs that online routes that lead people to the social giant were disrupted. However, some amateur analysts have taken a deep dive into the status of the site’s master code – and it appears to have been altered dramatically.

Could Facebook be gone forever? Rumours swirl on Monday

In fact, according to some onlookers, the damage *might* be enough to take Facebook offline for good.

A nightmare week for Mark Zuckerberg

Things have certainly gone from bad to worse for Facebook, which appears to be lurking from crisis to crisis.

Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old data scientist from Iowa, has worked for companies including Google and Pinterest – but said in an interview with CBS news show 60 Minutes that Facebook was “substantially worse” than anything she had seen before. The outage comes a day after a whistleblower went on US television to reveal her identity.

This, after she leaked a trove of documents alleging the social media giant knew its products were fueling hate and harming children’s mental health. US lawmakers and The Wall Street Journal have also recently reported how Facebook knew its products, including Instagram, were harming young girls, especially around body image.

Has the ‘master code’ been wiped?

Well, we know that all coders have ‘revisions of revisions’. The idea that the master code has gone forever is hard to fathom. And yet, it’s not an impossibility. This is the scale of the disruption we are dealing with, here.

Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone issued an apology on Twitter, acknowledging the severity of what’s happening:

“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Bruna invited a number of PSG players as this has been the case in the previous two birthdays where Mbappe had been a constant feature.

Surprisingly, Hamilton also honoured the invite as he is still in France for Paris Fashion Week, and the two PSG attackers took a picture with him.

IEC in Limpopo warns against non-qualifying registration for special votes

The Electoral Commission in Limpopo has warned political parties to refrain from registering non-qualifying voters for special vote home visits as this takes resources away from those who actually qualify.

Applications for special voting in the Local Government Elections close on Monday at 5pm.

The commission says it has recorded more than 20 000 applications for home visits in the province and found some to be proxy applications by political leaders for un-qualifying residents.

Sixty-nine political parties that are contesting in Limpopo pledged their commitment to the IEC’s code of conduct at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

Limpopo’s electoral officer, Nkaro Mateta, says they have been contacting some of the voters whose home visit applications they received, only to learn that most are not even aware of the application.

“By last night we had recorded 53 138 applications for special votes and of these over 20 000 are already approved for home visits. Political parties are warned not to abuse this facility as it’s an expensive project to execute particularly where proxy applications are submitted and the affected voters might not even be aware that such applications have been made on their behalf.”

Who qualifies for a special vote

Special vote applications should be made by voters who will not be able to cast their votes on the first of November at their voting station by virtue of being at work such as police, nurses, doctors and members of the media.

Voters who are not able to travel to the voting stations because of physical infirmity or disability should also apply.

Eligible voters, who are unable to travel to the voting station and have successfully applied for a special vote, will be visited at their places of residence or confinement on 30 or 31 October 2021.

Special voting takes place on the two days preceding Election Day. Voters may apply online at www.elections.org.za, via SMS by sending their ID number to 32249 or in person at their local Municipal Electoral Office.
