‘It’s shameful’: ANC slams DA over Phoenix campaign poster

The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has reacted to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) controversial posters in Phoenix, which have sparked some outrage online. It comes just three months after at least 36 people were killed during clashes between vigilantes and suspected looting during the July riots. The violence is reported to have been as a result of tensions between Black and Indian community members.

Despite the backlash over the poster, the DA is not backing down and says the posters will be put up all over Durban. The party also insists it isn’t trying to sow any divisions, including between the affected communities, which are still reeling from the violence.

ANC angry over DA Phoenix posters

The ANC in KZN says the DA posters prove that the party supports the heinous killings which took place in Phoenix and has labelled the opposition’s actions as desperate.

“The ANC calls peace loving citizens to ensure that all efforts are employed to reject the DA that wants to turn this province into the epicentre of racism. The disgusting act of the DA to pit people against each other using its election posters erected in the Phoenix area on the north of Durban shows that this party has no respect for human life,” says ANC KZN spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela.

The ANC says the DA posters is the party reminding South Africans that people needed to redouble their efforts in ensuring that South Africa became a truly non-racial country.

“What the DA has done in Phoenix is undisputable undermining our goal of building a united society. The ANC calls on the citizens to strive to end racial exploitation by the DA that plays with their emotions. We believe that members of the public should have a strong content that deals with social cohesion and need for racial harmony”

EFF calls for integrated plan to deal with housing crisis

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for an integrated plan to deal with the housing crisis in the country.

Speaking to the SABC in an exclusive interview on the party’s manifesto that was launched last month, party leader, Julius Malema said the EFF would convert some buildings in Sandton to house the poor if it won the Joburg Metro in the November 1 Local Government Elections.

Malema says the current status quo is an extension of the spatial planning of the apartheid government.

“There must always be, and that’s what should be the policy of South Africa, integrated human settlement. There shouldn’t be a settlement for the poor and settlement for the rich. Because you know what it means when it says settlement for the poor, it means black and settlement for the rich, it means white.”

“Then we are perpetuating the spatial development programme of apartheid which is of diving our people on the basis of colour but now you’re not using the colour, you use money to continue the same thing of colour division. So we will take buildings in Sandton, convert them into affordable housing, into low-income housing, into free housing for our people,” he adds.

Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe

Malema also says the party supports Western Cape Judge President John Hlophe for the position of the next Chief Justice.

Hlophe is among eight nominees selected by members of the public for the position.

In 2008, Constitutional Court Justices Bess Nkabinde and Chris Jafta said Hlophe had personally tried to convince them to give judgments in favour of then President Jacob Zuma on two cases that implicated him in corruption.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently called for public nominations for the position that becomes vacant on October 11.

WATCH: ‘Vote for ANC,’ Jacob Zuma urges in video message

In what some may consider an unexpected move, former African National Congress (ANC) president Jacob Zuma has spoken for the first time since being released on medical parole and has called on South Africans to vote for the governing party in the local government elections, which are scheduled to take place on 1 November 2021.

Zuma was speaking on a video released his by own foundation on Tuesday afternoon, 5 October 2021.

He recently returned to Nkandla after being imprisoned at the Estcourt Correctional Centre for violating an order by the Constitutional Court.

WATCH: Zuma wants you to vote ANC

In the clip, former president Jacob Zuma expresses concern over some voters who are opting not to take part in the municipal elections, citing various reasons.

“This really touched me and I thought I should share my views by asking those who are saying this to say let’s all stand up and vote, and vote more especially for the organisation that brought us freedom – the ANC,” Zuma says.

The ANC’s endorsement by one of its most controversial figures comes as a surprise as the strained relationship between the party and Zuma had raised questions as to whether he would even take part in campaigning ahead of the local polls. It is no secret that Zuma is not happy with some ANC members, particularly in the top six (with the exception of suspended secretary-general Ace Magashule).

In the video, Zuma also acknowledges there are unresolved issues between himself and the party, but encouraged people to vote nonetheless.

“It is of paramount importance for us to do that (voting for the ANC). Maybe I also have some reservations about certain issues, but I will vote. If we don’t vote we will find ourselves without a voice in the country’s affairs, without any power to change the people’s lives. I am pleading with you to rethink that, please vote,” Zuma said.

Mali summons French ambassador over Macron comments

Mali’s Foreign Ministry summoned France’s ambassador to Bamako on Tuesday over comments by President Emmanuel Macron that it said were unfriendly and disagreeable.

This is the latest salvo in a tense dispute between Mali and its key military partner France over reports Bamako could recruit Russian mercenaries as Paris reshapes its 5 000-strong counter-terrorism mission in the region.

Mali’s Prime Minister has accused France of abandoning it in the joint fight against Islamist insurgents.

Macron last week rejected the charge and questioned the legitimacy of the Malian authorities overseeing a transition to elections after two coups in just over a year.

In response, the Malian Foreign Ministry said it had summoned the French ambassador to inform him of the authorities ‘indignation and disapproval.’

At the meeting, Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop “strongly protested (Macron’s) regrettable remarks, which are likely to harm the development of friendly relations,” the Ministry said in a statement.

It said Diop also called for the two sides to take a constructive approach and prioritise countering the insurgency in the region.

Violence in the Sahel, a band of arid land that borders the south edge of the Sahara Desert, has intensified in recent years despite the presence of thousands of United Nations, regional and Western troops.

Diplomatic and security sources have told Reuters that Mali’s year-old military junta is close to recruiting the Russian Wagner Group, and France has launched a diplomatic drive to thwart it, saying such an arrangement is incompatible with a continued French presence.
