eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda and initiative champion MEC Kwazi Mshengu addressed the public at the launch of the programme at the Cato Crest Community Hall on Tuesday 5 October.
The launch started with the delegation visiting government and non-governmental facilities that offer medical services and treatment for HIV/AIDS, TB and STIs.
Kaunda pleaded with young people to make use of the facilities to protect themselves and encouraged those infected with HIV to start taking their treatment.
“We want to nip new infections in the bud and increase our efforts to track defaulters and get them back on treatment. eThekwini is the epicentre of HIV in the province but we have seen a decrease in the number of people on anti-retroviral treatment,” he said.
“This programme is one of the ways we want to accelerate our programme of providing post-exposure prophylaxis in all health facilities and Thuthuzela Centres,” he said
For more than three years, 39-year-old Weston Rowe has been eating raw meat, including beef, liver, chicken and other animal organs. Despite warnings about the consequences to his health, including having salmonella, Rowe, who is from Nebraska in the United States (US) says his raw meat diet has been working for him and helped raise his energy levels.
“I am in better health both physically and mentally, better than I’ve ever been in my life,” Rowe said to Caters News Agency.
Weston Rowe loves his raw meat
Weston Rowe says he no longer eats processed foods and spends about $140 a week on his special diet (that’s more than R2,100). He says all his products are sourced from local dairy and poultry farms.
Further elaborating on his odd meal plan, Rowe says he eats three times a day, adding that he rarely even snacks, but when he does, he’ll have three raw eggs and a piece of fruit (which is one of the only meat-free foods that he eats)… yum!
“I would say at this time I eat 99 percent farm-fresh raw meat and have never once been sick or unwell from my diet. The way I see it, it is a fair amount to pay to eat the best and most nutritious food in the world and actually equates to a similar amount I used to spend on junk food,” he said.
Rowe told the news outlet that he started eating raw meat when his energy levels started to drop and was experiencing brain fogginess. One concern over his raw meat diet: chicken, which has often been linked to salmonella. However Rowe says he has eated plenty of it and has never fallen sick.
“It is very controversial, but I believe that raw meat has a natural balance of bacteria on it which works symbiotically with our bodies and serves a purpose,” he said.
Dis-Chem Pharmacies has welcomed the government’s move to soon allow South African pharmacists to prescribe and dispense HIV medication, including PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) and first-line anti-retrovirals (ARVs), without a doctor’s prescription.
“It’s long overdue that pharmacists are able to best use their clinical expertise to play a valuable role in contributing to ending the high burden of HIV in South Africa. Any endeavour that will serve to broaden the accessibility of treatment protocols to patients and which will support the fight against HIV infections and illness should be applauded by the broader medical community,” she told IOL.
Dischem said that the easy accessibly of local pharmacies would make it easier for HIV-related treatment and care to be available to people as they are open after hours and on weekends. The group said that pharmacies also provided patients with a greater level of anonymity and are less stigmatising.
“Anyone who has HIV symptoms or who tests positive for HIV will qualify for this treatment. This initiative aligns with Dis-Chem’s philosophy of prioritising its primary health-care mandate and increasing its focus on providing health-care access to broader segments of the population,” she told IOL.
Dis-Chem employs at least one pharmacist and a nurse in each of its pharmacies that have completed the PIMART training. Dis-Chem’s clinic department has submitted almost 300 applications for the permit, of which 30% have already been approved.
