12 Punchlines From the 2021 Hennessy Artistry Cypher That Had Our Heads Spinning!

Hennessy released their 2021 Cyphers in 3 episodes of absolute Rap genius. Viewers were treated to an array of hard-hitting punchlines, from every artiste. There were simply too many to pick from, but here are the top 12 punchlines from this year’s Hennessy Cypher that had us off our seats!

Episode 1 saw Alpha Ojini, Psycho YP, BarryLane, and Legendary Styles go head-to-head, trading bars left, right, and center, resulting in an electic start to the Cypher. Alpha Ojini hit us with “Burna didn’t get this high by flying kites, but they need you to click so I guess it’s fine”; before Psycho YP hit back saying “So mans not ready, mans got plenty, man went headies, mans not headie; I don’t care about any, I just sip my Henny and it’s big YP!”.

Rap sensation BarryLane kicked off his freestyle with “How many hours you wait? How many dollars you made? How many people talk at your back when you bend down to tie your shoelace? The timing is never too late, be patient it’s still a new day”, Episode 1 was then wrapped up in style by Legendary Styles – “They say life is fair, but I don see enough bleaching cream to convince me now that my time is here, Legendary, styling them in a dodgy way like 6 & 9”.

Episode 2 had the season VII winner of the Hennessy Artistry VS Class, Matosan, alongside Escore Gatti, Preacher Kingz, as well as the first female winner of the Hennessy Artistry VS Class, Laud Reyes. Following the flying start from episode 1, these four kept the momentum going. Escore Gatti got episode 2 underway with “I devour, carnivore, bloodbath if I get involved, you should see my mask come off, NASA how I’m blasting off, I made it here not falling off, your verses got me nodding off”, until Preacher Kingz followed with “I’m still preaching, same reason they stoned Stephen; I saved the game now these rappers came for the thanksgiving”

Laud Reyes held her own as the sole female artiste on the Cypher when she said, “Hold on, wait, it’s corona coming; barbarian on the beat you’d think it’s conan coming”. Then it was down to the reigning king, Matosan to round off episode 2, and he brought the heat with “Too many bodies in my closet now I’m running out of space, like an astronaut, I’m talking to the moon”

The finale Episode saw some of the best Rap acts grab the mic to do what they do best. LadiPoe, M.I, Vector, and Ycee showed viewers exactly why they remain undefeated. LadiPoe started things off stylishly with “Henny Knows the problem with premium flows whether bars or XO, You people want it diluted”. M.I responded with “But back to my point my focus is shifting, my arms are tired of carrying the game that’s heavy lifting”

Vector kept it short and direct when he said “I don’t have to act a fool to get clout, every line is so thick you’d think I spit stout” and Bonus shouts out to Vector for the tribute to the late sound Sultan when he said ‘No King passed away when he passed, rest in peace Sound sultan, elevate with the greats’ . Finally, Ycee had the honor of drawing the 2021 Hennessy Cypher to a close – “Man I’m going all in like this was a gamble, get with the program or you change the channel; I can throw a stack heavier than shatta bandle”

There you have it! The top 12 punchlines from the 2021 Hennessy Cypher, and we just hope we get the same level of heat in next year’s edition.

Chike, Gyakie & Fiokee – “Follow You”

Nigeria’s acclaimed guitarist Fiokee, collaborates with Afro R&B/pop sensations, Chike and Gyakie, to create a mesmerizing love melody that is all shades of soothing and exciting christened “Follow You”.

“Baby know that I’m not crazy/ You know that I’m not lazy/ I will follow you anywhere that you want to go/ And I will let the whole world know that I am in love with you,” the heartwarming chorus from Chike captures the essence of the song, which peels into layers of love professions and honest assurances between lovers. Joined by the Ghanaian songbird Gyakie, then laced with Fiokee’s soulful guitar renditions, the track crescendos from the middle right down to the end, as a well-enjoyed meal relished with cold soda. Talented producer, Deyasso who also produced some songs off Chike’s debut ‘Boo of the Booless’, creates a soft-groove harmony that illuminates the vocal prowess of each of the singers while balancing them at the core.

With Follow You’, Fiokee continues to shape his discography with evergreen songs following his earlier releases this year such as Cut Soap, amongst others, have spotlighted the guitar prodigy as one of the most talented acts in the industry currently. Having worked with the likes of Tiwa Savage, Davido, Teni, Mercy Chinwo, Flavour, Yemi Alade, amongst others, he has also created a hit-laden portfolio that leaves you exclaiming like his signature song-openers, “Oh my God, Fiokee!”.

While the Chike and Gyakie feature is a no-brainer for an exceptional love anthem, it is definitely an amazing selection that breathed life into this melody. Chike, earlier this year, also released a cover of Gyakie’s hit-single, Forever, which heightened anticipation of a duet between the two singers.

Nigeria rescues 187 people from kidnappers

Nigerian security agents on Thursday rescued 187 people who had been abducted by armed gangs in the northwestern state of Zamfara, police said, after authorities launched a sweeping security operation against the kidnappers.

Since December last year, Zamfara has been at the centre of often violent kidnappings by heavily armed bandits who have targeted schools, villages and people travelling on highways for ransom.

The government last month shut telecommunication services in Zamfara and other states to disrupt coordination among the gangs.

Mohammed Shehu, the police spokesman for Zamfara, said in a statement that the 187 people, including women and children, had been seized by kidnappers from four local government areas in the state some weeks ago.

“The police and other security agencies have been carrying out assaults on identified bandits locations in different parts of the state with a view to ridding the state of all activities of recalcitrant bandits and other criminal elements,” said Shehu.

Pictures and video circulated by police to the media showed some of the people with torn clothes and struggling to sit as they waited to be transported back to their homes.

Armed gangs have grown bolder over time, attacking army outposts, breaking prisoners out of a jail and shooting down an air force jet in July.

Authorities in neighbouring states have complained that bandits driven out of Zamfara have poured into their territories and were causing havoc.

Nigeria beaten at home in World Cup qualifying shock

Nigeria suffered a humiliating home defeat in World Cup qualification on Thursday as the Central African Republic grabbed a last-minute winner for a shock victory in Lagos.

Substitute Karl Namnganda, who plays in the fourth tier of French football, took advantage of a defensive mix-up between William Troost and Leon Balogun to score a stunning winner and throw their qualifying section wide open.

The upset overshadowed the rest of the day’s African qualifiers where there was also a significant win for tiny Equatorial Guinea over Zambia and a third successive victory for Tunisia.

Norwegian-based striker Ibrahima Kone netted a hat-trick for Mali as they thrashed Kenya 5-0 while Benin’s win in Tanzania put them in pole position in their group.

Nigeria had won their opening matches in Group C and were expected to push further ahead at the expense of lowly Central African Republic, who were without their only recognised star Geoffrey Kondogbia of Atletico Madrid, who is refusing to play because of the poor organisation around the team.

Victor Osimhen hit the post early in the second half for Nigeria and fluffed another chance but the Super Eagles were largely subdued in what was expected to be a routine home assignment.

It was the biggest win in the Central African Republic’s football history as they moved to four points.

Nigeria still lead the group on six points but Cape Verde’s 2-1 win in Liberia, where Garry Rodrigues rifled home a stoppage-time winner, also puts them on four points.

Tunisia kept up their 100% record after three games in Group B as they beat Mauritania 3-0 at home, with second-placed Equatorial Guinea three points back.

Mali shrugged off having to cede home advantage and play in Agadir, Morocco because of the poor condition of their stadia as they hammered Kenya and are two points ahead of Uganda in Group E.

Uganda won 1-0 earlier on Thursday away to Rwanda.

In Group J, Benin remain two points clear of the Democratic Republic of Congo as both teams won.

Steve Mounie scored a 71st minute winner for Benin away to Tanzania, while the Congolese were 2-0 home winners over Madagascar in Kinshasa.

There are six more African qualifiers on Friday as teams battle it out in 10 groups, with only the section winners advancing to the playoffs in March to decide the five African representatives at the Qatar 2022 finals.

Bafana Bafana news | Relief for Sundowns, Kutumela cleared to face Ethiopia

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that Thabiso Kutumela will form part of his squad to face Ethiopia on Saturday and Tuesday.

The two nations will face each other in back-to-back qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup which will be played in Qatar.

This comes two days after Broos took swipe at Mamelodi Sundowns for trying to sabotage Bafana Bafana by allowing Kutumela to vaccinate in the middle of the camp.

There were concerns that Kutumela might have to withdraw from the Bafana Bafana squad but Broos confirmed the presence of the Sundowns attacker in the camp.

Broos said the only time he would have considered withdrawing Kutumela from the squad was if he had shown symptoms after taking the vaccine.

Consequently, Kutumela has traveled with the rest of his Bafana Bafana teammates to Ethiopia, and will remain in camp for the return leg.

“Kutumela is still here. So, I didn’t withdraw him,” Broos told the Bafana Bafana media team.

“I think that I said very clearly that because he was vaccinated. The risk was there that could have symptoms after that,” said Broos.

“So, the two following days after the vaccination are crucial; you can have symptoms like fever, like cough… flu symptoms. Therefore, I was a little bit anxious,” he admitted.

“It could have happened but Kutumela stayed with us on Monday. He wasn’t withdrawn and today (Thursday), we can say that this risk is gone. There is no risk anymore that he could have symptoms,” continued Broos.

“So, Kutumela stays with us until Monday. He did all the trainings with us – there is no problem. He goes with us to Ethiopia,” added Broos.

Oil cleanup in southern Nigeria still a ‘long way’ from target

A much-touted cleanup of oil pollution in southern Nigeria has yet to start in parts of the hotspot Ogoniland, almost three years after contracts were handed out, and residents remain without proper drinking water, a report said Thursday.

Nigeria, Africa’s biggest crude producer, has struggled with oil spills for decades, triggering social unrest and even militancy across the Niger Delta.

LONG OVERDUE OIL CLEANUP

The kingdom of Ogoniland in Rivers state, home to about a million people, became an emblem of the problem after years of oil and gas exploration and production by a joint venture with Shell.

After mass protests led by activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and the so-called Ogoni Nine, Shell stopped production in 1993.

OIL CLEANUP TO RESTORE NIGERIA

The Nigerian government pledged to restore the damage after a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) assessment of the area 10 years ago.

The UN said at the time that an initial cleanup would cost $1 billion and take five years. Cleanup activities finally started in January 2019.

FAR LONGER TO CLEANUP

But a report by two NGO monitors issued more than halfway through the five-year timeframe says the cleanup will probably take far longer.

“We can see some progress being made, and it’s important to recognise that,” said Florence Kayemba, programmes director of the Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN), which co-authored the report with the Centre for Human Rights and Development (CEHRD).

TEMPORARY JOBS

Over 1 000 temporary jobs for community members with cleanup contractors have been created, the monitors said.

Thirteen out of 50 lots considered “simple” to clean have been certified as completed, they added.

However, “this is just a quarter… and we have yet to begin cleanup of complex sites, so this shows that we have really quite a long way to go,” said Calvin Laing, SDN’s executive director.

“That five-year target seems unrealistic now.”

DRINKING WATER HIGHLY CONTAMINATED

Emergency measures prescribed by the UN in 2011 “are yet to be delivered,” the report noted.

“Communities which were identified as having highly contaminated drinking water sources in 2011 still do not have access to improved, safe drinking water sources,” it said.

“Health screening of communities that would help understand the impact of pollution is yet to commence.”

‘MUCH FASTER’ CLEANUP ACTIVITY NEEDED

Cleanup activities need to happen “much faster” added Kayemba, but “without sacrificing quality.”

SDN and CEHRD set up an interactive online dashboard on Thursday to help track progress.

SHELL NOT RESPONSIBLE

The Ogoniland cleanup is “crucial” said Laing, as it “could also be a template for elsewhere in the Niger Delta.”

Earlier this year, Shell agreed to pay around 95 million euros ($110 million) to Ogoniland communities over spills in the 1970s, although it has said damage to pipelines was caused by third parties.
