Zayn Malik collaborates with ARNETTE for eyewear collection

Connecting expressive worlds on every level, Zayn and ARNETTE take consumers on a journey through an alternative utopia with an exciting new co-created collection. And it’s more than just a product launch – it’s an ongoing creative collaboration, a fresh campaign inspired by Zayn's own artwork and a whole new take on sustainable eyewear, produced using only biobased materials.

Zayn collaborates with ARNETTE for eyewear collection

“I’m very interested in design and the creative elements of a campaign, so it was quite cool to work with a brand like ARNETTE,” states Zayn. “The team has been really open and receptive to my ideas and have been a great partner.”

Zayn’s expressive vision plays out like a multi-level videogame, creating a surreal escape that leaves the city in the dust of a neon light storm. From graffiti art to retro race heroes, this creative collaboration captures an awakening of creative minds. Now unexpected, the mood of the collection shifts from vaporwave visuals to retro in a flash, a note of 90s nostalgia and loads of contemporary attitude.

“The whole retro vibe of the campaign is sick,” states Zayn who adds, “One of my favorites is the Drophead, which pushes an iconic shape to the next level with the updated design.”

Showcasing five edgy, yet easy-to-wear styles named after iconic retro cars, the collection presents innovative bio-acetate and iconic metal shapes that take us on a ride from 80s inspired graphics into the experimental dimension of a new world. Featuring powerful bold square profiles, low-and-wide wing shapes and deeprim metal, exclusive new bleached tie-dye colors, and colorful see-through and flash mirror shades, each has a defined look and style. Marked out with graphic Z lens logos, each pair reflects Zayn's signature approach to style.

No Rhea Chakraborty on Bigg Boss, confirms a source close to the actress

There are stories doing the rounds that Rhea Chakraborty will be entering the new season of Bigg Boss as a contestant. However when I contacted someone close to Rhea the speculation was put to rest.

No Rhea Chakraborty on Bigg Boss, confirms a source close to the actress

“Rhea is not going on Bigg Boss. We don’t know where the rumour comes from. It is the worst signal she can send out to the film industry at a time when she’s trying to re-establish her career in movies,” Rhea close friend tell me, and urges me to set the record straight.

“Such rumours are allowed to gain momentum because Rhea is not speaking to the press. Once she breaks her silence she can clear the air once and for all,” says the friend.

Rhea made her comeback last month in the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Chehre after her boyfriend Sushant Singh Rajput’s death in June 2020. The role was far too brief to leave an impact. Now Chehre director Rumi Jafrey is planning a love story with Rhea.

Several LiquiFruit drinks recalled – due to ‘high levels of a dangerous toxin’

A mould toxin, found mainly in rotting apples, has been detected in a number of popular LiquiFruit products sold on by Pioneer Foods. The manufacturing group was forced to issue a full recall for five separate items on Thursday, after they were discovered to contain unusually high levels of mycotoxin patulin.

Dangerous mould toxin found in ‘limited’ LiquiFruit products

An unhealthy amount of this fungus in your body can cause serious nausea and vomiting. A statement issued by the company last night aimed to quell consumer fears, insisting that this course of action ‘was a precaution’:

“The health and wellbeing of our consumers is of absolute importance to us, and hence when we identified the potential of a food safety issue, after in-house standard testing and engagement with one of our local suppliers, we immediately launched an internal investigation into all our 100% apple juice products”.

What LiquiFruit drinks have been recalled?

Various brands of apple juice have been put up for recall by Pioneer Foods:

  • LiquiFruit Clear Apple (250ml carton) | Barcode: 60052599

  • LiquiFruit Clear Apple (330ml can) | Barcode: 6001240225561

  • LiquiFruit Clear Apple (300ml can) | Barcode: 6001240239346

  • LiquiFruit Clear Apple (1 litre carton) | Barcode: 6001048000339

  • Ceres apple juice products sold OUTSIDE OF SA have also been recalled

Another soft drink recall for South Africa

Customers will be able to return these items to the store of purchase, where they will be granted a full refund.

This latest incident comes a little over a week after Coca-Cola SA was forced to recall six batches of Appletiser brands, also due to elevated contents of mycotoxin patulin – with the poisonous element posing a problem for our soft drinks.

More than 37 000 cases of Appletiser have since been recalled, as the industry opts to play things safe.

Drug forum launched to deal with soaring substance abuse

South Africa has become a consumer, producer and transit country for drug trafficking requiring a “drastic change” in drug policy KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala said on Thursday.

Zikalala was speaking at the launch of the KZN Anti-Substance Abuse Forum in Durban on Thursday.

“The proliferation of drugs into our country and the continuing culture of alcohol abuse is visible in the many poor people we see on our streets living on a life of begging, some not just to get food, but to get a fix. Bridges have become homes for citizens who have given their lives to substance abuse,” Zikalala said.

“Addiction to substance abuse continues to tear families apart and cause untold pain to children. In the last analysis, drug abuse knows no gender, class, race, ethnicity, or creed. All communities suffer from it. With the launch of this forum, we place our hopes in it that it will succeed in arresting the challenge and in lessening its impact on individuals and societies,” he said.

He said the global drug problem and response presented challenges to the health, safety and well-being of people in South Africa.

“South Africa has become a consumer, producer, and transit country for drugs. A drastic change in approach to drug policy recognises that a punitive approach alone has not been successful in tackling drug-related problems,” Zikalala said.

He said research suggested that emphasis should be placed on evidence-based public health and social justice principles that focus on individuals, families, communities, society as a whole, and must underscore social protection and health care instead of a narrow focus on conviction and punishment.

“An increasing demand for drugs causes an increase in drug manufacturing, smuggling through ports of entry, and dealing in and consumption of drugs. The illicit trade in psychoactive drugs and criminal enterprise is a threat to the safety and well-being of South Africans and poses a growing and significant hazard to national security, economic growth, and sustainable development,” Zikalala said.

Studies suggested that whoonga and incika were the most popularly used drugs in the province, as well cannabis and alcohol, he said.

“These drugs are a particular concern because they are often used by children and adolescents, where rapid intervention is required to avoid an epidemic,” Zikalala said.

He said research showed that alcohol was the substance with the greatest burden of harm in the country. SA ranks in the top twenty for per-capita alcohol consumption levels worldwide and is the country that consumes the most alcohol in Africa.

Strengthening the knowledge base of the drug problem by improving data collection, analysis and dissemination, including on the links between drugs and other issues, was critical to an effective South African response, Zikalala said.

The Provincial Anti-Substance Abuse Forum was critical as would allows for the coordination of all substance abuse interventions. Members of the Forum would be responsible for the implementation of the country’s National Drug Master Plan.

The functions of the Provincial Anti-Substance Abuse Forums include:

  • Strengthening member organizations to carry out functions related directly or indirectly to addressing the problem of substance abuse;

  • Encouraging networking and the effective flow of information between members of the Forum;

  • Assist Local Drug Action Committees established in terms of Section 60 in the performance of their functions;

  • Compile and submit an integrated Mini Drug Master Plan for the province for which it has been established;

  • Submit a report and inputs, annually, to the Central Drug Authority for the purposes of the annual report of the Central Drug Authority; and

  • Assist the Central Drug Authority in carrying out its functions at a Provincial level.

“The success to fight the issue of substance abuse in our country also depends on the continued support of the government, communities, and the business sector to provide the necessary resources, infrastructure, and accountability,” Zikalala said.

Insurance firm ordered to pay tourism businesses for lockdown losses

The Supreme Court of Appeal has  dismissed Santam’s appeal and upheld the Western Cape High Court’s finding in favour of Ma-Afrika Hotels (MAH) and Stellenbosch Kitchen (SBK) in the final stretch of the battle to hold Santam liable for Covid-19 Business Interruption claims in the tourism and hospitality industry.

The decision means that Santam is obligated to pay Ma-Afrika Hotels (MAH) and Stellenbosch Kitchen for the full 18-month period of its policies.

AndrĂ© Pieterse, Chairman and CEO of MAH, said:  “We are most grateful to the honourable judges of the SCA since originally Santam had argued that they had no obligation in terms of the policy.  However, following the judgment in the Cape High Court in November 2020, Santam acknowledged their liability, but argued that it was only liable for 3-months despite the full bench of the Western Cape High Court having rejected their argument.”

 Ryan Woolley, CEO of ICA welcomed the ruling.

 “We are extremely happy with this decision as it provides much needed certainty for the finalisation of outstanding claims for businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector, who have had to wait more than 18-months for valid claims to be settled,” he said.

“The court’s decision in this matter is crucial for thousands of Santam’s hospitality and leisure division’s business interruption policyholders, and once the claims are settled by insurers funds will flow to assist a desperate sector of the economy,” Woolley said.

“We all know that the endless litigation and slow progress on payment of claims by certain insurers has had a devastating impact on businesses in a sector that remains severely challenged by the pandemic, affecting the lives of thousands of employees and their dependents,” he said.

He said insurers’ behaviour throughout the debacle had been a “travesty”.

“In essence, they chose to abandon their customers in their darkest time of need.  This has impacted not only the reputations of short term insurance companies, but also on insurance as an overall category.  Their Stalingrad strategy of deny, delay and defend has eroded the public’s trust in insurance and we anticipate that it will take significant effort, commitment and time to restore customers’ faith in the sector, ” Woolley said.
