Carrick dismisses ‘myth’ that Ronaldo can’t press

Manchester United caretaker manager Michael Carrick says it is a “myth” that Cristiano Ronaldo is not suited to a high-pressing style of play and backed the Portuguese forward to thrive under interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

German coach Rangnick, who will take charge after receiving a work visa, is a proponent of ‘gegenpressing’ – a style of football in which teams press with high energy to win the ball back as soon as possible, rather than falling back to regroup.

Carrick, who looks likely to continue as caretaker for United’s game against Arsenal later on Thursday, said 36-year-old Ronaldo had the qualities to adapt to any tactical changes that Rangnick would implement.

“Maybe it is a myth (that Ronaldo can’t press). He’s played in enough teams over the years and been successful to play in a variety of ways,” Carrick said.

“He has kept scoring goals for every team he has played for and I am sure he will continue to score goals, no doubt about that. Players adapt anyway. You’ve got to have skills for different styles.”

Ronaldo is United’s top scorer this season with 10 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions.

Carrick also downplayed his decision to drop Ronaldo for United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea and commended the Portuguese international for responding in the right spirit.

“He was incredible. He supported the players,” Carrick said. “A lot can be made of it and trying to spin it in a negative way, but behind the scenes, it is very different.”

United are 10th in the league and have picked up one point in their last three matches. Arsenal are up to fifth place after winning four of their last five matches.

HARDER lockdown expected SOON? Govt COVID-19 advisor weighs-in

The spike in COVID-19 cases has prompted speculation of tighter lockdown restrictions being implemented any day from now. When President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday, he announced that South Africa would stay under level 1 of the lockdown – but said the situation would be reviewed in a week.

“We will then need to determine whether the existing measures are adequate or whether changes need to be made to the current regulations. We have started the process of amending our health regulations so that we can review the use of the Disaster Management Act to manage our response to the pandemic, with a view to ultimately lifting the National State of Disaster,” Ramaphosa said at the time.

While it’s nowhere near a week, the COVID-19 figures are on the rise – the latest show that over 8 500 new cases were picked up on Wednesday. If history has taught us anything it’s that nothing is set in stone, especially in how government handles the pandemic. This is partly why many have reckoned that Ramaphosa could impose tighter lockdown restrictions on us much sooner than we would expect him to.

Harder lockdown: Here’s what a government advisor says

According to Professor Kholeka Mlisana, the co-chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19, despite the dramatic hike in cases, it is still too early to tell whether enforcing tougher lockdown restrictions would be warranted.

“We continue to see the increase in numbers, especially in Gauteng. What we are seeing is that there is a different spectrum that we are seeing in that the majority of infections is from the younger age groups, which we had not been seeing before,” Mlisana said on eNCA.

She says for now, they don’t have enough data to analyse the severity of the latest COVID-19 infections.

“We are still watching this. We want to have it documented, the number of hospital admissions and which wards are being affected and whilst at the same time, the provinces need to make sure that the resurgence plans that are already in place, they now need to start kicking in so that they can be ready for the increase that we are seeing in admissions”

Health Department: Get R200 when you get the jab

The Department of Health has increased the Vooma Vaccination voucher on Wednesday to encourage more people to get the jab.

THE AGE GROUP HAS ALSO BEEN DECREASED

Spokesperson Foster Mohale said the age group has also been decreased, as it was initially only aimed at those 60 years and above.

“Due to the low uptake, we have expanded the scope and now include those 50 years and older, and we increased that value of the voucher. So, from now on, the value of the voucher is at R200,” he said.

PURPOSE IS TO ENSURE THOSE AT HIGHEST RISK ARE VACCINATED

He said the purpose of Vooma Vouchers is to ensure that as many people aged 50 and older get vaccinated ahead of the 4th wave because they are at the highest risk of getting severely ill or dying from Covid-19.

Mohale said the problem is that the rate of vaccination among older people is now very low.

“Fewer than 8,000 people 50+ are being vaccinated for the first time every day, which means that there will be close to 4 million 50+ unvaccinated at the end of the year. They are now at high risk with the approaching 4th wave,” he said.

MAKING IT AS EASY AS POSSIBLE TO GET A VACCINE

“One of the reasons why people do not come forward for vaccination is that they still have to pay to get to the vaccination sites or may have other expenses associated with it, even though the vaccination itself is free. We want to try and make it as easy as possible for people to get vaccinated.

“The value of the Vooma Voucher has also been increased to R200 from Monday, 29 November, given the heightened urgency to ensure that all people aged 50 and older are vaccinated without delay,” Mohale said.

The voucher can be used within 30 days at any Shoprite, Checkers, or U-save.

VOUCHERS ARE ONLY FOR THOSE GETTING JAB FOR THE FIRST TIME

However, Mohale explains that the new increased value is only for those who are getting the jab for the first time.

“At this moment, we are encouraging all unvaccinated people; for now it does not apply for those who have received a jab.”

HOW DOES THE VOOMA VOUCHER WORK?

  • For the month of November (starting 1 November for 60-year-olds and 18 November for 50-year-olds), every person who is 50 years and older and goes for their very first Covid-19 jab, will automatically receive notification of a R200 voucher as an SMS on the cell number they gave for vaccination. They can redeem it at any Shoprite, Checkers or Usave store. They will be invited to send an SMS to say “Yes” to confirm they would like to receive it. This SMS is free.

  • Those people who do not yet have a free Money Market Account with Shoprite will need to register either in-store or by free USSD, WhatsApp or mobile App. This free service will ensure that the voucher can be traced and re-issued if it is lost and if it has not already been redeemed. It also means that people do not have to spend the full voucher all at once.

  • The voucher is valid for 30 days after receiving it.

  • Vouchers will be issued until the end of December 2021 or until vouchers run out, whichever comes first. So far, we have funding for 260,000 vouchers. Vouchers will only be given to people coming for their first dose (i.e. either J&J vaccine or first dose Pfizer). Vouchers will not be issued for the second Pfizer dose.

Kaizer Chiefs reignite interest in Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder ahead of January transfer window!

Kaizer Chiefs are said to have re-ignited their interest in Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi ahead of the January transfer window.

The injury prone player has struggled for game time at Sundowns this season, and Chiefs could be set to take advantage of his situation, according to reports.

Vilakazi has struggled for game time this season

The stiff competition at Sundowns has again, restricted Vilakazi to just five appearances for the Tshwane-based outfit so far this season. That, including the previous seasons where he has suffered a similar fate, could be tempting the former Bafana Bafana international to make a move away from the current DStv Premiership champions, with Chiefs said to be monitoring his situation.

Sundowns beat Chiefs to his services in 2016

Known to be long-term admirers of Vilakazi, Chiefs missed out on signing the player while he was still at Bidvest Wits. For a long time it seemed as if Vilakazi was destined for a move abroad, before a reported tussle for his services ensued between the Amakhosi and Sundowns. In the end, the Chiefs management were rumoured to have bulked at the huge transfer fee Wits were asking for at the time, which then resulted in Sundowns having a clear path towards his signature.

Now, according to Soccer-Laduma, Chiefs are considering rectifying the mistakes of the past and securing Vilakazi’s signature this time.

Amakhosi back in for Vila?

“According to well-placed sources, there is talk within the Amakhosi corridors that the club could make an approach for the player (Vilakazi), as Stuart Baxter continues to rebuild the side.” Wrote the publication.

What adds further fuel to the fire of this rumour is the fact that, Vilakazi was a member of the Bafana Bafana squad that reached the quarterfinals of Afcon 2019. That particular squad was coached by Baxter who is the current Chiefs coach. It would then seem as ‘Vila’ is a player who’s qualities, Baxter is fond off and maybe keen to reunite with the player at Naturena.

Yash Raj Films is venturing into the booming digital content (over-the-top or OTT) landscape of India. YRF’s streaming content production business will be called YRF Entertainment and it will churn out five marquee projects to begin within its first year. The first big project to hit the floors from the banner is titled The Railway Men – a tribute to the railway workers at Bhopal station who are the unsung heroes of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, the world’s biggest man-made industrial disaster. YRF announced this project on the same day to salute the heroes of Bhopal who saved thousands of lives when the crisis hit the city 37 years back. The Railway Men is being directed by debutant Shiv Rawail, who has been homegrown at YRF and is being mentored by Aditya Chopra.

YRF Entertainment announces first web series The Railway Men starring R Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu Sharma and Babil Khan

Shiv will start the proceedings at YRF Entertainment with his content-forward one-season limited series about the resilience of human spirit in the face of a disaster. The Railway Men will feature four brilliant actors like R. Madhavan, Kay Kay Menon, Divyenndu Sharma and Babil Khan. These four actors helm the show and the company will also announce the presence of several other powerful performers in due course of time. The Railway Men started filming from December 1st, yesterday.

Akshaye Widhani, Senior Vice President of Yash Raj Films, says, “The Bhopal Gas Tragedy is the world’s worst industrial disaster that has impacted scores of people since the tragedy struck the city 37 years ago. At YRF, we are constantly trying to develop the best compelling stories for the audience and this is our tribute to the unsung heroes of the tragedy who, despite saving thousands of lives on that fateful day, are still unknown to people across the world.”

Yogendra Mogre, Executive Producer at YRF Entertainment, adds, “The Railway Men is our salute to their spirit, their courage, and their humanity. This is a story that needed to be told. We are not going to leave any stone unturned to ensure that this story reaches out to audiences, across the world, in the best possible way so that they can understand the depth of devastation that this tragedy has caused in India.”

In the late hours of December 2, 1984, methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide factory owned by the American Union Carbide Corporation. It has been reported that more than half a million people were poisoned that night and the official death toll exceeded 5,000.

Thousands of survivors have said they, their children and grandchildren are struggling with chronic health problems like cancer, blindness, respiratory, immune and neurological problems as a result of the leak.

YRF Entertainment’s The Railway Men will stream on December 2, 2022, as a homage to humanity and colossal sacrifice in the wake of a crisis that shook the nation.
