ANC yet to file Electoral Court application to reopen candidate submissions for LGE

The African National Congress (ANC) is yet to file its much-anticipated application with the Electoral Court to force the IEC to reopen the submission of candidate lists for the forthcoming local government elections.

This is despite the governing party’s earlier intention to file the papers before the end of business last Friday.

It wants the Electoral Court to instruct the IEC to reopen the process for a day to allow it to register almost 30 candidates in different municipalities across the country.

The ANC  failed to register some of its would-be councillors by the cut-off time on August 23 citing technical glitches.

Yesterday there was still no record of any application filed with any court against the IEC.

ANC may not be able to contest elections in 30 municipalities:

Meanwhile, the United Democratic Movement has reiterated its intention to join the court application to request for the reopening of the registration for election candidates.

Deepika Padukone to star in and co-produce cross-cultural romantic comedy for STXfilms and Temple Hill

STXfilms, a division of Eros STX Global Corporation (NYSE:ESGC) (“ErosSTX”), announced today the company is developing a romantic comedy for global Indian icon Deepika Padukone, who will also produce the upcoming film through her Ka Productions banner. The announcement was made today by Adam Fogelson, chairman, STXfilms Motion Picture Group.

The studio is also in negotiations with Temple Hill Productions Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen (the Twilight franchise, The Fault in Our Stars, Love, Simon) to develop the project, which will be a sweeping cross-cultural romantic comedy centered around Padukone. Isaac Klausner is overseeing the project for Temple Hill.

Commenting on the announcement, Fogelson said, "There is a reason Deepika is one of the biggest global stars to come from India. She is enormously talented with an infectious personality and her profile continues to grow as an international superstar. While she has been a phenomenal success in many Eros International films, we are thrilled to be building a romantic comedy with her and our friends at Temple Hill. We believe this project gives us the opportunity to tap into the spirit, voice, characters and vibrant settings of India and New York in ways that made Crazy Rich Asians feel so authentic and fresh.”

DEEPIKA PADUKONE was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time magazine in 2018.In 2018 and 2021, she featured in VARIETY’S ‘International Women’s Impact Report’ which celebrates the achievements of women in entertainment around the world.

The actor made her English language film debut as the female lead in XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, co-starring with Vin Diesel.She is also the principal of Ka Productions, the production company behind Chhapaak and upcoming films The Intern and ’83. She is currently in production on Shakun Batra’s and Siddharth Anand’s untitled films.

Prior to this, Padukone starred in the critically acclaimed film Chhapaak based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. She also played the titular role in Padmavaat which broke all box office records. Other credits include the award-winning and critically acclaimed films Piku and Baijaro Mastani, the highest and third highest-grossing international Hindi language film releases, respectively.

Last year, she received the prestigious World Economic Forum Crystal Award for her leadership in raising mental health awareness.

Office of the AG to brief Parliament Committee on COVID-19 relief package findings

The office of the Auditor-General will today brief Parliament’s Select Committee on Health and Social Services about its findings on the COVID-19 stimulus relief package.

It will focus on the R350 social grant that the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been administering to distressed unemployed people.

The office of the Auditor-General earlier said that about 5,6 million people had received the grant by the time the audit was conducted.

It said 67 000 beneficiaries were identified as fraudulent. The briefing is also expected to discuss top-up grants, the distribution of food parcels as well as fraud-risk areas.

R350 grant reinstated

During his last address to the nation in July, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the reinstatement of the R350 grant as he moved the country to Alert Level 3 of the COVID-19 lockdown.

The President also said the grant will be paid until March 2022 in an attempt to help struggling households.

Ramaphosa said R27 billion had been set aside for this purpose.

At the beginning of August Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said more than 517 000 applications for the R350 social relief grant, that were previously approved, were yet to be collected from the SA Post Office.

She urged applicants who have not claimed or received their payments to urgently contact SASSA.

Anderson belts down 49 aces in first-round win

Former finalist Kevin Anderson fired down 49 aces to defeat Czech Jiri Vesely 7-6 (1) 4-6 3-6 7-6 (5) 7-6 (4) in the first round on Monday, stunning spectators at the US Open.

The 6’8″ power server rattled off 17 aces in the final set alone, the last one coming on match point.

The South African broke into wide grin in his moment of triumph before hoisting his arms a loft.

While his ace tally was well short of John Isner’s record of 113, which he achieved during his 11-hour five-minute first-round win at Wimbledon in 2010, it nonetheless earned a standing ovation from the crowd packed into one of Flushing Meadows’ outside courts.

Anderson, the runner-up in 2017, faces 11th seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in the second round.

Wizkid’s summer song “Essence” which features Tems, has become the “most Shazamed” song in the United States.

“Essence” which was released off Wizkid’s fourth studio album, “Made in Lagos album”, has since become a hit after it appeared on global music charts across the globe. The song also gained international recognition across the globe shortly after  Justin Bieber featured on the remix of the track which appears in the deluxe edition of the MIL album.

Wizkid’s jam broke another record by becoming the first African most shazamed song on US Shazam. Shazam gave the announcement via their social media page while sharing the Top 200 Most Shazamed songs in the US. They wrote:
