Media executive linked to River Club developer

By Steve Kretzmann

In June this year, the publication Cape{town}etc published an editorial criticising the controversial River Club development in Observatory, Cape Town. The editorial was swiftly removed.

  • Over the next week, three articles favourable to the development were published.

  • On 1 July, Kevin Ferguson, the chief executive of Highbury Media, which owns Cape{town}etc, was listed as a director of an online shopping company set up by the developer of the River Club project, Jody Aufrichtig, and his brother.

MEDIA EXECUTIVE LINKED TO DEVELOPERS

The chief executive of Highbury Media joined the board of a company with links to the developers of the controversial River Club project in Cape Town soon after an editorial criticising the development was removed from a Highbury publication and replaced by a series of articles favourable to the project.

Highbury Media owns numerous publications, including Cape{town}etc, Getaway, Business Day Empowerment, Business Day Earth, and Popular Mechanics.

DEVELOPERS HOUSE AMAZON HEADQUARTERS

The removal of the critical editorial and publication of three new pieces on Cape{town}etc occurred just before work on the R4.5 billion development started, on 26 June this year. On 1 July, Highbury Media CEO Kevin Ferguson took up a directorship in Daddy’s Deals, a company set up by River Club owner and developer Jody Aufrichtig and his brother, Daniel.

The R4.5 billion development at the confluence of the Liesbeek and Black rivers has attracted opposition from civic associations, including the Observatory Civic Association and Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council. They believe the development is inappropriate on land seen by many as the first site of colonial dispossession by the Dutch, where the Khoi were forced from their ancestral grazing lands. However, the First Nations Collective supports the development. The 150 000 square metre development, which is to house Amazon’s new Africa headquarters, has received backing from the City of Cape Town and the provincial government.

DEVELOPERS GOT GO AHEAD ON LAND

The property’s owners, Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust, bought the 14.5 hectares of land from Transnet in 2015 for R12 million.

The Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning granted the trust environmental authorisation to proceed on 20 August last year. Former mayor Dan Plato dismissed appeals — including one from the City of Cape Town’s environmental management directorate — against the City’s Municipal Planning Tribunal decision to grant the trust rezoning rights, and on 19 April gave the developers the go-ahead.

On 9 June, an editorial criticising the development was published on Cape{town}etc, owned by Highbury Media. In the editorial, titled “Rifles vs. Knobkerries – Amazon to build on Khoi and San land”, editor Robyn Simpson wrote that the development was “a tangible metaphor for the cancer that is globalisation consuming everything linked to that which is distinctly and historically African”.

“I am disgusted by the blatant disregard,” wrote Simpson.

CELEBRATING KHOI AND SAN CULTURE

Within 24 hours, the editorial had been removed from the Cape{town}etc site, with no explanation or note to readers. Over the next two weeks, three articles praising the River Club development suddenly appeared on the news site.

On 16 June, an article ‘R4bn River Club development removing the cycle of Khoi and San invisibility’ was published. In the article, Jody Aufrichtig, director of the trust and “the man behind the River Club development in Observatory”, stated that he was “sick of all the lies” from those opposing the development. He claimed the development would be “a cultural and historical hub” celebrating Khoi and San culture. This was based on a deal struck with a new group set up as the First Nations Collective headed by Zenzile Khoisan. In terms of the deal, Khoi and San symbols and street names would be included in the precinct, there would be an indigenous garden, and a First Nations media centre and an amphitheatre.

On 18 June, an article responding to environmental concerns over the development —- as expressed in an op-ed in Daily Maverick — was published, followed by an article on 24 June about the trust’s deal with the First Nations Collective.

Neither of these articles carried a byline.

BOARDROOM CONNECTIONS

Soon after the publication of these articles, and four days after work on the River Club site started, Highbury Media CEO Kevin Ferguson was officially listed as a director of Daddy’s Deals, an online shopping company set up by Jody Aufrichtig and his brother Daniel Aufrichtig in 2011. According to the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), Ferguson became a director on 1 July.

On the same day, Jody Aufrichtig and fellow trust director Nicholas Ferguson resigned their directorships of Daddy’s Deals, while Daniel Aufrichtig remained.

A link to the Daddy’s Deals site has been housed on Cape{town}etc since July. One of Ferguson’s fellow Daddy’s Deals directors, Gavin Basserabie, is also directly connected to business interests with Jody Aufrichtig. Basserabie and Aufrichtig are both directors of a Canadian company which develops pharmaceutical products.

MARKED ‘COINCIDENCE

Ferguson did not respond to detailed questions sent to his personal assistant Kovi Naidoo. Nor did Cape{town}etc editor Robyn Simpson.

Naidoo told GroundUp on the telephone that there was no family relationship between trust director Nicholas Ferguson and Kevin Ferguson, and that the timing of the Highbury Media CEO’s appointment as Daddy’s Deals director was “a coincidence”.

Emailed questions included whether there was a financial exchange for Ferguson’s directorship of Daddy’s Deals, and what measures were in place to ensure editorial independence within Highbury Media publications from Ferguson’s business interests.

Anti-apartheid icon Swaminathan Karuppa Gounden dies

Tributes have poured in for political activist and trade union leader Swaminathan “Swami” Karuppa Gounden, who died on Tuesday morning.

WHAT MADE GOUDEN SUCH A WELL-LOVED ICON?

He was 94-years-old. Gounden was born in 1927 in Durban.

Gounden was popularly known as one of the last surviving ANC members who attended the historic signing of the Freedom Charter at the 1955 Congress of the People in Kliptown, Soweto.

He participated as an activist and leader in most of the major historical campaigns in the Struggle against apartheid in South Africa.

These included the 1946 Passive Resistance Campaign, the 1952 Defiance Campaign, the 1955 Kliptown Conference and the 1983 launch of the UDF.

HE WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO SEE THE DAWN OF DEMOCRACY

The ANC said Gouden was fortunate enough to see the dawn of democracy and voted for the first time in 1994 as a free and equal citizen of his country.

“His contribution and community service towards improving the living conditions of the oppressed people have been profoundly recognised. Because of his dedication and service to the people of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaposa bestowed him with the order of Luthuli.

“We want to extend our sincere condolences to the Gounden family, and while we mourn his departure, we take comfort and will always be indebted to his contribution in our liberation struggle, and we can attest to his generosity, humility, and respect for human dignity,” the ANC Provincial Spokesperson Nhlakanipho Ntombela said in a statement.

‘CELEBRATE THIS REMARKABLE ICON’

Ntombela further urged all those who loved Gouden to celebrate ‘this most remarkable icon of our movement‘.

“Undoubtfully, his name will always be adorned in the history of our struggle.

“To the family, we say take solace from knowing that the Congress movement shares your pain, and you are in our prayers as you prepare to lay to rest our dedicated comrade, a stalwart, and a leader of our people,” she said.

The Grammy-Award-Winnig artist commenced his 3-day ‘Made In Lagos‘ O2 Arena sold out concert in London on the 28th of November, and will be wrapping it up tomorrow, with a thud, alongside 20 thousand concertgoers.

As we all know, the past couple of days have been excitingly overwhelming as Wizzy has been granting his fellow artists major recognition by calling them on stage to perform. On his first day, he surprised his fans by bringing out his long-term friend, American artist, Chris Brown who has not performed in London for over 10 years now.

Yesterday, he brought out Buju, Bella Shmurda, Naira Marley, Lojay, Giggs, to mention a few, giving most of them their debut O2 arena performances.

However, tomorrow, Wizzy wants to end the show on a unique note, as he has revealed that the whole Made In Lagos Album + Deluxe will be performed from top to bottom and he would love for everyone to come as one. No guests; No friends, just 20 thousand drunk concertgoers.

Falz Slams Governor Sanwo-Olu, Rejects His Invitation For A Peace Walk

Nigerian Rapper, Falz has rejected the invitation of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu for a peace walk in December.

On the 30th of November, Sanwo-Olu in his press briefing on the Endsars panel report, invited Folarin Falana (Falz), Debo Adebayo (Mr. Marcaroni), Dele Farotimi, Temitope Majekodunmi, Segun Awosanya (Segalinks), Adedotun (Just Detoun), Seun Kuti; Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, and Commander of Rapid Response Squad, RRS, CSP Yinka Egbeyemi and others to join him in the “historic march”.

Mr Marcaroni took to his Twitter account to reject the Governor’s Invitation. In his tweet, he wrote that ‘genuine peacemaking will begin by first implementing the recommendations of the panel’

Reacting to the invitation, Falz described Sanwo-Olu’s invitation as a joke, noting that it is disrespectful to invite him for a peace walk, while justice has not been served since the alleged killing of protesters at Lekki Toll Gate.

In his own words; This suggestion of a “walk for peace” sounds like a joke and a very disrespectful one at that.

People were murdered in cold blood and absolutely no iota of justice has been served more than a year after. How can there be peace without justice? #EndSARS”.
